We have a brick fireplace that is painted in flat white in our living room.  It's not a large fireplace though.  The mantle is thick wood and painted a glossy *High Hiding White*, if I remember the color correctly.

 

I have two large round cylinder vases that I put flowers in every week after I do my weekly cleaning and shopping.  Right now it's a mix of pink and white carnations with a few yellow ones that lasted from last week.

 

That's all that's ever on the mantle.  For holidays, I do white flowers only.  Red doesn't look good with my decor.
