It’s not worth the chance of losing our dog. Wchrn you live on a woods and there is so much wild life. Sorry nope even the best trained dog will run. Our last golden was pretty laid back. He probably would of done fine without a fence. But he had a prey drive that was unbelievable. If he saw a rabbit in the back yard he would of been gone without a fence. Our neighbors who are moving have two goldens. They do well. But for us it is not worth losingour dog. She did go out with us now. But she drags a lead so we can grab it if she goes to run off. All dogs are different. All the training in the world isn’t going to stop s dog who has a high prey drive when there is tons of wildlife. Plus letting her out on two acres in the pitch black after dark is not worth the chance. Try training a husky to stay in it’s yard. Almost impossible.

i mentioned earlier in this thread that we have no fence and are not allowed fences in our area......and i prefer it that way. none of the homes i have lived in have had fences. it is just not that common in our general area.
our dog is trained to not go beyond our property lines and not go into the street (we have about 1 acre of land.) we have lots of wildlife.....tons of squirrels, chipmunks, deer, a fox, birds, and an occasional possum. he doesnt bother them or run after them at all. when he goes out he does his business, his sniffing, his walking, and then comes back in.
others in our neighborhood have dogs also......one occasionally comes onto our property, but the owners are quick to come and get him. other than that, everyone has their dogs trained and there are no problems like that on our street. we have lived here a long time.
do we have "strangers" come onto our property? of course.....delivery people, mailman, ups, schwans delivery, religious solicitors, lawncare, and an occasional roof or driveway guy trying to sell something.

We have a wooden six foot privacy fence. I've never lived anywhere without a fence. I don't like being exposed without a fence.
Everyone has a fence where I live. My neighbor just put up a new white fence. It looks so pretty.
I don't think I would like chain link. I've seen where people have put up chain link because they have so much property, but enclosed a small area with a nice looking fence. They've fenced in twice.

We also live in southern CA and most people have fenced in back yards.
We live on 3 acres and our property is completely fenced, cross-fenced, and has an electric gate. At first, part of our property was open, but even though our driveway is clearly private property, people seemed to think that our driveway was open to the public? One day I watched a couple walk their dog down our long cement driveway and go out to our field. There, they took their dog off the leash. Their dog ran along the fence of our field where our goats were kept. The dog ran back and forth along the fence line trying to get at our goats which were panicking. Then the dog ran into the horse corral and jumped around our horse. The couple were pointing and laughing at their dog's "antics" while all of this was going on. Their dog was one horse-kick away from being killed, or if their dog injured our horse, they were in for a law suit. I went outside and rather politely yelled at them to get their dog back on the leash. Took them 5 minutes to even catch the dog. Then they casually strolled back up our driveway with no care in the world. The whole event left me speechless.
Within the month we finished fencing off the property and installed the gate. You can't fix stupid, and a lot of people are stupid.

Oh give me a break. You are always so judgemental. Personally I would NEVER use an invisible fence and it would NOT be how I chose to train my dog.
My dog has been to dog school, is very well behaved and NOT a "nuisance" to anyone. However, I believe that the expense of a fence is well worth being able to let my dog run free in my yard without worrying about him ever getting distracted by an animal and chasing it. It gives me peace of mind.
If you don't like fences, fine, that's your right. However, how dare you accuse any one that has a fence because of a dog of having an untrained nuisance pet!
