Is your decorating ever inspired by t.v. shows or movies?

I'm a huge fan of goofy old shows like Andy Griffith and Denis the Menace. I watch them often on Netflix and Hulu.  I love the decorating style of those days, 1950s and early 60s.  I'd love to have a retro-kitchen and my overall decorating is a bit like that, too.

Do you get inspiration from t.v. shows or movies?

I saw a cover of Country Living years ago. It was a potting shed with a farmhouse sink. I saved that cover for many years and when I was ready to re-do the kitchen, I was able to recreate it.

I have collected kitchen items since I was a teenager. I had to take 2 buses to school and one stop was near the central Goodwill store. I started collecting Fiesta, Depression glass, Buffalo China, Harker, etc. My juice glasses are all "swanky swigs" - the small glasses that used to be filled with jelly or cheese spread.

I would rather re-use old USA made items than buy new junk from China.

Not really inspiration, but I always pay attention to the decor on those 50's  and 60's shows.  I wonder what the rent would be for some of the New York apartments, like on Family Affair or That Girl.

My life is an eclectic mix of antiques and Mid Century Modern.

I like antique furniture, especially oak, but for kitchen use, I love the MCM stuff like Pyrex, Corningware, Farberware and Revere, the older Tupperware etc. I don't display a lot of that stuff, but it fills my cabinets and basement and I use them often as they remind me of all the great cooks in my family during my growing up years. I do use a lot of old dish sets on my table regularly too.

I love looking at the home decor and kitchens in old TV and movies too. I spend a lot of time looking at the homes and things in them and not the 'story' that is being told!

No, tv doesn't inspire me.  I got the ideas to decorate my house from touring open houses.

I LOVE all that stuff and try to decorate our home in the vintage style!  I love ruffled curtains and crocheted doilies on the end table.  I'm also a huge fan of the Napco ceramic figures from the 50's and 60's.  (I promise, it's not as tacky as it sounds)!  I pick up vintage salt and pepper shakers and decorate with those in our kitchen according to the seasons.  I try now when I want to purchase something for the house to only go vintage.  It keeps me from spending money on things I know I'll eventually grow tired of and end up donating.  I was recently watching Andy Griffith and noticed the china cabinet in their dining room with only a few items on it.  Simple and charming!  :-)

Edited to add ~ If you haven't already, google Big Chill Appliances.  These are American-made refrigerators, etc that look like the ones from the 50's!  They come in retro colors, too!  Super expensive but so cool.....

@terrier3 I have some coffee glasses I bought at the Brimfield flea market in Ma. Some years ago. A small glass cup that says "Buffalo's best cup of coffee" Deco Restaurants. Deposit 5 cents. I thought you might have heard of the restaurant.

So you got a glass coffee cup to go, paid five cents deposit and then returned it. I love the look of the glasses. I can't post a pic, but if you google, they will come up.

There's a lithograph of dragonflies in Regina's office on "Once Upon a Time" that I love.  Her whole office is very much my style.

YES - I remember Deco well! It was a small local chain. There is a storefront in a suburb tht still has the original turquoise paint on the front - the Deco color.

Thanks for the memory!

My whole house is 50's and 60's.  It has been that way since I married in 1972.  Everything I have has been purchased at garage sales, flea markets, eBay and Etsy.  Once the show Mad Men became popular everything mid-century went sky high!

I just don't like new things.  No quality or character goes into the production of new stuff.
