Re: Is your decorating ever inspired by t.v. shows or movies?

Back in the day I got a lot of my inspiration form Better Homes & Gardens magazine when it was a nice, larger, and informational. Down here I got some from visiting open houses in the newer developments.

Re: Is your decorating ever inspired by t.v. shows or movies?

I see lots of ways to decorate on TV and in magazines,  but then I don't know where to purchase what I'm interested in.  I'll look and look for a certain style or item and I usually cannot find it at a reasonable price, and end up settling for something I don't really like all that well.

However, I've had the best luck in finding some things I've been looking for at Home Goods, things that I just could not find anywhere else.

I used to watch "Eight is Enough" and LOVED the master bedroom decor--highboy, brass bed, nothing really matched. This was a time when everyone I knew had matched bedroom sets! When I decorated our master bedroom I used that as inspiration. I have an ornate metal four-poster, antique secretary that mimics a highboy chest, etc. Not one thing "matches" another except for the two nightstands! After all these years, I still love that room.

I don't remember the name of the town, but there is a place in Wisconsin like a B&B but it is decorated like the house in Andy Griffith.  You can stay in Aunt Bea's room, Opie or Andy's rooms, and they look like the original. Kitchen is decorated like the show, and I know at one point they were going to replicate the jail in part of the home.

I haven't been there yet, but it is on my bucket list

I don't watch much tv but when I do see the old shows mentioned here, I look all around the rooms and really take it all in.

My husband watches westerns, from the really old ones up to the new ones.  They're ok but get boring, so I usually end up focusing on the scenery and I love seeing the indoor settings, too.  I notice what (if anything) is sitting around the kitchen or table area in the old cabins and shacks.

I like the arched front door and the floors in Lucy's farm house:

My kitchen is a mix of decades, from 1950s sink to 1970s cabinets and off-white laminate countertops, and I love most of the features, although I realize that many people would hate it and want to update.

Whenever I've seen kitchens with similar features to mine on shows like Fixer-Upper, etc., I say to myself and sometimes to the tv, go ahead, rip it all out like it's garbage.  But it could have been removed with care, because I'll bet someone somewhere would've loved to re-use it.  Makes me sad when they do that, but I know, I know, these are remodeling shows, and that is what they do.  Just sayin. :-(

My sink is like this and my natural stained wood cabinets are similar colored, although the style and knobs are different.  I tried to upload a photo, but Photobucket is acting up and that is where I store my photos to upload here.

I remember when Lucy and Ricky moved to 'the country', and that house always fascinated me!

That 1950's Early American style was a mix of original EA (which I love) with some of that decades design interpretation of EA (that I didn't love, especially those horrible lamp shades everyone had).

I used to like to watch the changes in their apartment too.

@SHOPR I LOVE those sinks! If I had a bigger kitchen, I would have one.

@Mominohio, It's funny, because I actually don't remember them moving to the country, and only a few months ago did I see an episode with Lucy and Ethlel in a strange wood-filled house.  It turned out to be the episode with the hundreds of baby chicks.  I was fascinated by the house just because it surprised me.

I don't remember for sure the lamp shades you mentioned, but I can imagine they're probably pretty bad.  I know just with the generations in my family, I've noticed some really nice and sometimes funky lamp bases, but some of the super huge lamp shades have been terrible.

@proudlyfromNJ, I really do enjoy my sink, well, as much as a person can enjoy the place where so many dishes have to be washed.  LOL.  You're right, they are huge and take up a lot of counter space.

Has anyone seen an old Barbara Stanwyk movie called Christmas in Connecticut?  I love that house decor...so cozy and inviting.  I think it must be mid 40's.  I wouldn't do my house like that, though.
