Our front door is at the bottom of the bedroom stairs.  Our front door is solid wood with side lights covered with a curtain.

If you have to get past the front door to get what you need, then you need a front entrance that is private.

It seems like they'd be very heavy.  And would rust.  But, no matter; some people like that look.

We had decorative iron doors with screens installed over both our entrance and patio doors.  We live in the woods and we had pine trees incorporated into the design.  They are beautiful and practical as we can lock them and leave our other doors open during the day, so we have a nice cross breeze.  Sometimes we leave our other doors open during the night during Spring and Summer.

@ValuSkr

Actually, they do not rust, they are heavier than wooden doors.

I read iron doors can rust over time.  If they get direct sun and get hot I'd be concerned with heat transfer to your home's interior.  Maybe look at fiberglass doors, they have the look and benefits of wood without the rotting problem.  Most have beautiful glass inserts.

@ScrapHappy   I looked at iron doors online. I think they're beautiful. The privacy issue with the glass might be solved by using a frosted or textured glass in them.

@ScrapHappy ---could you post a picture---I would replace with a metal door in a heartbeat at my house--had a wooden door that my idiot ex hung and never stained so it got pretty beat up and looked awful---It warped during the cold and wet of fall and winter so it was hard to open and close---and the wood cracked around the frame--such an idiot--and a carpenter too.Smiley Mad

I don't know how to post pictures but DesertLily did within the thread.  There are many styles to choose from.
