You need to buy Pacific Silvercloth. You can get it by the yard at Amazon. My grandparents bought us our sterling flatware when we got married 47 years ago, and it has been kept in a Pacific cloth lined chest ever since. I have never polished the silver, ever, and it is as shiny as the day it was given to us.

ETA--I don't know what happened here! A reply so nice, I said it twice!{#emotions_dlg.laugh}

It's not the climate. You need to buy Pacific Silvercloth. You can get it by the yard at Amazon. My grandparents gave us our sterling flatware as a wedding gift 47 years ago, and it's been kept in a Pacific cloth lined chest ever since. I have never, ever polished my silver--not once--and it's as shiny and bright as the day we received it.

Get it out ziplock bags and USE it. My MIL used the silverware she inherited daily..it didn't tarnish a bit. Why keep it hidden in a box?

angry bird i so agree. we convinced my mom to take out her good silver (lunt eloquence) and start using it every single day! why should it be stored away to use a few times a year? when you use it every day it becomes enjoyable versus being something that has to be put away and not admired. life is short......use your good silver daily! Smile

I have some sterling silverware and would like to use it daily, but don't because I don't like to wash dishes by hand. This is the electric dishwasher age and I'm spoiled.

I tried the hard way and the dishwasher will ruin (discolor) them quickly.

I agree - i am way too lazy to wash all the silverware by hand. And leaving it out exposed to the air - esp. the salt air here on the Gulf of Mexico would not be a good idea.Besides I like to have some things that are special for special occasions and special people.

it isnt that difficult to wash them by hand.....how many pieces of silverware do you use in a day? i think it is nice to enjoy your nice things every day......to feel special EVERY day, especially as you get older. so much better than them sitting in a box or in baggies.

Amazon also sells a silvercloth storage case designed to fit in a drawer; works well for a complete set. When we lived in Florida we could never display our holloware--it would tarnish in a week.

Well then, that is what YOU should do, because that makes you happy. However, I feel differently so I should do what makes ME happy with my belongings.

You can buy anti tarnish fabric by the yard at JoAnn Fabrics. A lot cheaper than going thru Amazon.

NO, NO, NO! Do not store silver in plastic zip lock bags. Go on line and Google silver keepers. They have them in various configurations but get the pieces out of those ziplock bags immediately!

As usual Amazon to the rescue. Antitarnish zip close plastic bags - 10 for $14. Woo Hoo.

Please don't store your silver in plastic. I posted a link above that says not to store in plastic. There are also other replies saying not to store in plastic. I just don't want you to have more problems after storing in plastic. Please search it online.
