Re: In the evening, do you turn on the lights in areas you're not using?

One of my indulgences has been collecting small (Oriental)lamps for over 20 years.  They only need a tiny nightlight bulb or a chandelier/candelablra bulb.

I have them strategically placed at main entrances, the kitchen, our bedroom, and the living room.

A dim light adds a nice ambiance and you can see your way through a hall or room without having to turn on a light.

I have solar path lights leading up to the front door and on our decks.  Our one neighbor keeps their house lit up like Las Vegas--even when they're not here for the summer months--saves me from using my front lights.

I use flameless candles and and salt lamps.

I promise to remind myself every day that I am strong, courageous, and resilient.

I do leave some lights on all night in parts of the house that we don't frequent.  I like to have areas lit in case I do get up in the night and go downstairs.

Oh yes. At dusk I go into my bedroom (front) and put the lamps on. I go into my hall and put that light on and my porch lights so when the family comes home it's all bright.  Even on a gloomy day I do the same.

Re: In the evening, do you turn on the lights in areas you're not using?

We live in the country, and I crave the dark outside. So while we have lights on the front porch, back deck and a light in the yard, we keep them off unless needed. I love the total darkness that one finds in the country.

As for inside, that is another story. I'm not a fan of bright overhead type lighting, unless I need it for doing something specific. So after dark, most rooms in my house have a small (often Tiffany style) lamp lit, giving even unused bedrooms a homey and warm glow. I also have a lot of flameless candles going throughout the house.

Any room that I will be spending time in after dark will have several lamps on. If I'm working in the kitchen, i will have overhead fluorescent lighting going as I need lots of light in there.

Re: In the evening, do you turn on the lights in areas you're not using?

Various lighting left on all day and night at my home.   I change which rooms I leave on but I do leave many on daily.  I have outside lights on all the time which makes our yard appear to be daylight at night.

I am not skeered at they say here but I want my daughters safe if I am not home.

The extra money on the power bill is worth it to me as long I have a job to pay the bill.  One day this may have to change but until than we will be assessable to be seen from the road.

I have neighbors if someone put a moving truck in front of their home and filled it, I would never be able to see it and I have floor length windows that I can see the homes 24/7/

As our Pizza Delivery boy states our neighborhood is a thief's delight so few use outside lighting nor inside.

No, electricity here is way too expensive to do that, so the only lights on are in the rooms we are in at the moment.

We turn on as few as possible, as to do otherwise is a waste of energy, even with those horrible "energy saving bulbs," which we refuse to use. Ever try to do needlepoint under one of those saving lamps?  My eyes cringe...

Re: In the evening, do you turn on the lights in areas you're not using?

No. I really try to conserve energy as much as I can. So at night, DH may be in the living room watching tv and he'll have one dining room light turned on....that light shines into the living room and gives enough light that he can see to change channels or whatever he needs to do. If I'm back in the bedroom reading, I'm using my Nook or my iPad. I may have a light turned on, but it's quite dim. If I'm watching tv, I have no lights on in the bedroom at all.

There are times when DH is away on union business. I come home from work, feed the furkids, make my own dinner and then clean up. After scooping boxes and such, I will often go back to the bedroom around 8:00 or so, either to read or to watch tv. And all other lights in the house are turned off at that point, other than a small night light in the main bathroom. We don't like to waste electricity.

I love a lot of lights on at night, but my husband not so much, so we compromise. We do close our drapes at night though, and we have sensor lights on our garage and our front and back doors......
