In the evening, do you turn on the lights in areas you're not using?

Our kitchen is in the back of the house.  If it's dusk and I'm starting dinner, the front is dark.  People don't drop buy without calling so don't even think of it.

i like a light on in the front of the house -  even if i'm not in that room.  i don't turn on all the lamps -  just one to show people are home - and to be welcoming.

Re: In the evening, do you turn on the lights in areas you're not using?

When my DH used to travel for work I would be home alone and I would only light the area where I was but now he is retired and he wants the lights on all over the house. He goes around the whole house turning on lights - every room , even the empty guest room, and the laundry area. Then when he goes to bed I have to go all over the house and turn them back off. He also never closes the shutters as he is turning the lights on so I have to be sure to do that because you can see right into our house from the street, we are very close to the street, tiny front yards. Then in the morning all the shutters need opened again or it is very dark in here. This is the same man who complains that I waste electricity because I turn on the ceiling fans or run the dishwasher or washing machine.

I have a small lamp I turn on near the front door.  I turn it on when we leave so it's on when we come home.  I don't like a completely dark house.

I love lots of lights so most of our rooms are lit at dark, all of our outside lights and spots are on also.

I guess I turn on as few lights as possible.  I have flameless candles in rooms/areas that may need light if passing through.

The first person down the hall after 6:00, turns the bathroom light on and leaves it on until bedtime, which lights that end of the house; the overhead kitchen light takes care of lighting the living room and dining room, and I use a floor lamp in the room where I watch TV.

I usually leave the lights on over the kitchen island.  I turn them off when we go to bed.

To me, well lit houses are warm and inviting homes.  I have lights on all over the house and (as long as my husband is home) I prefer leaving all the window treatments open so outsiders can see life inside. In the evening and from the street I have always enjoyed looking in windows to see how people have their homes decorated.

We also keep lights on when we go out for the evening/away for the weekend or longer.

ALWAYS have at least one lamp turned on in the living room as soon as it gets dim.  At least 2 lights in the kitchen, around the sink area.  Light in the dining area only when we're eating.

When hubby goes hunting and is away for more than a week in Nov., MANY more lights are on - inside and outside (but I don't feel he needs to know that).   Smiley Wink
