Is "premium" melamine really a thing? I agree the national brand tends to wear out pretty quickly, but I do trust them not to damage surfaces and they are pretty cheap. Thanks for the suggestion.

Sorry I can not help with the science behind the textile but I can say I hands down - no contest I find them less damaging than the grocery store brand as the texture is smoother, almost more velvety.  

I have ruined paint jobs and other surfaces with the grocery store brand.

I even used the Knock Out sponge on my mother's brand new car to remove a black scuff she got on her car in a parking lot. No damage BUT  I would NOT RECOMMEND trying this at home!! and I would never do that with a Magic Eraser.

For how long they last- the grocery store versions are VERY expensive. They are good for on good project then the garbage can.

But it is nice to have choices
