How to remove mold from outdoor furniture cushions

I did a quick search, could not find anything related.

I have Pier 1 cushions for an outdoor wicker set, cushions were new last year. Got them out of storage today, and I was really upset to find some areas of blackish gray mold on them.

I seem to remember a thread with suggestions, but it may have been in viewpoints.

Would like something I can apply and scrub. Can't launder them.

Any ideas??? TIA!!!

Try Dawn liquid dish soap. Just a guess on my part. I'd be afraid to use vinegar, but if all else fails, maybe try warm vinegar mixed w/ dawn soap. Half and half. Do a small test patch on the fabric first. Good luck.

Toss 'em and buy new ones. They're pretty cheap. Check stores like Big Lots and Marshalls, Home Goods, etc.

If you live somewhere warm, you can leave them out in the direct sun. That's how I've removed mildew from some items.

Re: How to remove mold from outdoor furniture cushions

This is the exact reason why I only purchase outdoor cushions & pillows that zip-off and can be thrown in the washing machine. I would suggest power washing(can be rented at stores such as Home Depot and etc) with Dawn. This is what I did before decided to pay more upfront for removable covers. I literally would take a bottle of Dawn and squirt a little on each cushion and power wash....brand new in less that 15 mins. It was suggested to me at Pier 1 and it works like a charm. It gets expensive rebuying cushions every year and time consuming to manually clean. Good Luck!!!

I had to have mold taken out of my house and they used a special green cleaner. If all else fails, you could call a mold remover company and ask them what they recommend. Home Depot would have suggestions too.

Put fresh squeezed lemon into a small spray bottle and spray the mold. While still wet, rub table salt onto the lemon juice and scrub....rinse and you're done.

Re: How to remove mold from outdoor furniture cushions

Thank you, thank you all! Will report back about results.

I think the mold issue is related to the fact we live in a heavily wooded area. When we lived on our farm (house was in the open, in the middle of the property) it was never an issue.

My cushion covers are all non removable. The cushions for the table chairs are small enough to wash at the laundromat, but my wicker cushions are not washable. And I do love the pattern/colors; from P1 last year. They are lime green and TQ, but in a pastel, muted pattern. Very pretty, love them!

You can clean them, whitelinen. There are several different ways. I googled and a few different solutions came up.

Pier One cushions are expensive and worth saving.

Re: How to remove mold from outdoor furniture cushions

When we moved to Fl we put our outdoor furniture on the moving van - when it got here it was covered with mildew. I was just sick about it ! I decided I had nothing to lose by taking the cushions to the laundromat and washing them in those big washers they have and using bleach on them. They came out perfect, it was exactly what they needed - bleach. Brought them home wet and laid them in the sun on the driveway to dry. They have stayed nice since - of course they are out in the Florida sun now so their unlikely to get moldy again.

I agree with using a bleach solution to get rid of the mold spores. The bleach solution does not have to be super strong, but bleach will kill the mold and mildew spores so they don't come back.
