Re: How often do you replace your furniture?

Except for the bed, which I wish I still had, I've had the same bedroom furniture for 62 years.   Hardrock Maple, I love it.

But everything else, comes & goes.   I need new living room furniture now.

But I could never keep up with my MIL.   She loved to decorate & changed decor, including furniture every few years.

My problem is this, when I buy new furniture, I will want to paint, get new curtains, etc.

Re: How often do you replace your furniture?

[ Edited ]

Good question.  We do change with the times, I don't live like my parents and grandparents who kept their furniture for decades.  The concept of redecorating and replacing perfectly good furniture "just because" would have been foreign to them.  We were married in the 80's and I was a sahm for 10 years, we did not buy heirloom quality furniture back then.  I remember our first furniture set was one of those "3 rooms of furniture for $799 deals.  It was not lifetime furniture...lol   That's what we had in our first little house.  When we sold that and moved up to a bigger home; we did over time replace the furniture and we did buy quality furniture.  When we bought that house, my parents bought our dining room set for us and that was a small fortune...for us.  It was a big house and we had a family  room and a play room upstairs for the girls so there wasn't a lot of wear and tear on our furniture.   We painted, bought new carpet and new curtains and stuff like that over the many years but we never bought new furnture even though I was working full time.  We didn't need it and we had so many other things to do with our money. And the colonial furniture went so well with our colonial home.   When the girls graduated college and went off on their own,  we did sell our house and we downsized to a modern condo.  The heavy old "brown" colonial furniture just would not have looked nice in our spanking brand new condo.  We did buy all brand new furniture for the condo.  The dining room sideboard was the only piece we took with us and that is in our dining area now.  So, fast foward 12 years and I actually am thinking about a new living room set.  There's nothing wrong with the one we have,  I'd just like something new.  I bought a new chair for the living room last year and I thinking walking around the showroom looking at all the furniture made me start thinking.  So, I'm pretty sure there will be another living room set in my life at some point.  And probably bedroom set too.  Not because we need new furniture.....because I want new furniture and we can afford it.   We have family friend who is a psychiatrist, he's single and he makes really good money but he isn't rich.  He re-decorates every 5 or 6 years.  Last time he went from a French country theme in his home to an Asian theme and he tossed out or gave away everything....everything went.  I still have some of the kitchen appliances he said didn't "go with" his new black&white kitchen.   He started with the bare walls and replaced everything in his home.  Everything had to go because the theme and the colors in his home changed so drastically.  I saw him in June and he mentioned that he's wants to re-decorate because he's "tired" of looking at the same stuff.  The thing that really amazes me is the speed at which he changes everything.  He takes two weeks off work, disposes of the "old" stuff one week and goes on mad shopping sprees and replaces everything the second week.  It took me a month of looking and deciding just to pick out that one chair last winter!

Re: How often do you replace your furniture?

As it turns out new family room furniture is coming this week. It started out by just replacing the torn couch, then the room has not been painted in 19 years, so that is being done. Carpet was not looking good so that is also being replaced. Furniture and carpet are 10 years old and get a lot of wear so I guess it was time.

We purchase really good furniture pieces and I keep them for years. Our living room sofa was a total splurge with down cushions but I have already had it for ten years and will keep it for many more. I also take really good care of my things. Always have done this.

I replace accessories quite often and changed my color scheme several years ago. Pillows and lamps are a weakness with me and I change these out a lot.

My husband has several antiques that are valuable but I dislike them totally. He keeps a secretary that belonged to his grandmother in his study.

I also change out accent pieces often. To me, this keeps our home fresh.

Re: How often do you replace your furniture?

Antique wood pieces are my favorites so I'll never get rid of those. My sofa and chairs are Flexsteel and LayZboy so those typically last 15 years. I don't have fancy or ornate furniture. As long as it isn't worn, I'd have no reason to replace frequently.

Re: How often do you replace your furniture?

I still have the bedroom suite (now guest bedroom) my father got me in 1959, the maple chest of drawers and folding leaf table, walnut top and cherry legs, made for my grandfather in 1909 when he married, the oak rocker that came from the family physician's office when he retired in the 1920's now refinished and reupholstered, and my mother's tables from the 1930's. All are in use and holding up well. The master bedroom suite we got in the early '80s when DH and I married.

We do have a new couch and chair in the living room, but most of the furniture is at least 30 years old. Also new end tables for the living room, but the old living room end tables I bought in 1972 are repositioned in a bedroom and family room.

Re: How often do you replace your furniture?

Lately I've been getting rid of my furniture and not replacing it. I happen to like empty rooms. It's the minimalist in me that takes over.Woman Happy I live in a house with very few pieces of furniture and I like it that way.

Re: How often do you replace your furniture?

Wood pieces are basically lifetime for me (some were from other people's lifetimes before mine! LOL). When I choose a wood piece, I tend to still love it as much decades later.

Upholstered pieces, I tend to keep for at least 20 years. Just got rid of my sofa in the last year, And I'd had it for almost 30. Decided not to replace it and live without one in the living room.

I've never had the money to completely redo rooms or the whole house at once and often, and honestly I don't really have the desire to do so.

When they can no longer be repaired so therefore can no longer be used.

Re: How often do you replace your furniture?

Just bought a new large coffee table and side table for my great room. I'm giving away/placing elsewhere my other 3 year old furniture. These pieces fit much better with my cottage decor. Woman Happy
