Re: How often do you replace your furniture?

Funny timing on this thread as I just replaced my furniture last week after 12 years. What really makes a difference is changing out lampshades too!

Amazing how this investment has "upgraded" the look of our home. Was well worth it!

Re: How often do you replace your furniture?

I replace some large furniture items when I move or when they are beat. Just moved this week and will be out tomorrow. For my new place I am replacing my beat up, well used family room sofa, my 15+ year old behemoth of a TV, kitchen table to smaller, new bed, just because, but keeping the dressers, new living room lamp shades.

I buy what I like and rarely tire of things. Even keeping my bedding and matching window treatments. I will replace accessories, but not often large ticket items. Some I keep past what is probably their useful life.

Now my sister? She thinks anything older than three years has to go. Clothes, shoes, bags, cars, furniture. Not exaggerating.

We have had most of our furniture for over 35 years.  We have replaced the sofa/chairs/etc when they are worn.  I have antiques over 200 years old.  I do not furnish in trendy styles, but that is my choice and it works for us.

Ditto!

OP - aren't you the person who said there had not been anyone in her home for 25 years? And you were in a tailspin over having to clean for someone coming who was gonna work on your house? So do as you please. What's the difference?

Re: How often do you replace your furniture?

When we built this house in 1981, we bought quality, built to last pieces.

Our master bedroom furniture will be here when we die.

When the girls move out, they will take their bedroom furniture with them, and I will decide then what gets replaced.

In 43 years, we have had 4 living room suites; the current one is 5 years old.   As soon as I see visible wear on the cushions, I start looking for a new set.

We are on our second dining room table and chairs; first one withstood the years of raising our girls.   Our current wooden table and chairs is what I always wanted, and my cabinet maker make a China cabinet that matches so well it looks like a set.

We do seem to have a revolving door when it comes to recliners tho.   My husband has worn out two since I retired  5 years ago, and got a new one last month.    After recovering from both knee surgeries on a loveseat recliner, I replaced it last month as well.   I think we are good for awhile.

The living room is the room that gets the most use, while awake.  I like to replace the seating every ten years.  I just replaced a leather chair.  Curtains, decor, pictures, pillows get swapped out a minimum of once a year.

When the kids grew up and moved out, I had pieces made in classic styles and they are like new still, and I still love them .🙂

I actually always buy "good" furniture so I haven't replaced it yet.

Now, ask the younger generation in a couple years who idolize IKEA with the pressed board drawers and particle board construction, I'm sure they'll say every 4-5 years if that.

@Mistreatedbycs.  I buy kitchen things from Ikea. Is it your kids or grandkids that buy the particle board stuff or just kids you know?

I bought Raymour and Flanagan sofa, what a piece of junk!

Every time we move!  It's cheaper to buy new than to move the stuff.  In the past 20 years, we've moved three times so new furniture every 7 or so years.

@kaydee50  Wow!  That is a lot of moving!  Do you sell and buy your home each move?
