I wrap it and crate it too... I don't think there is a perfect way, at least not one that's practical for most of us... I guess we have to balance our hope to preserve it all against the time it takes to store and retrieve it and the practicalities of the limited space most of us have to store it... I try to store a few more precious pieces in a cabinet or piece of furniture.

Of course you know about ornament storage boxes. For other, larger, things, bubble-wrap and tissue paper are useful.

Bubble wrap, foam, tissue paper, newspaper - store in plastic storage containers and cardboard boxes. I have a huge storage area under my stairs - I keep all my Christmas stuff in there - it doesn't get touched again 'til next year.

I use ornament containers and bins with tissue paper, bubble wrap and holiday towels. I have a ton of those and make nice wraps. Double duty that way. I have bins and just purchased some so I could carry them upstairs when I go to decorate. I had a huge one and would put all kinds of things in that and then haul things up a few at a time and took forever. So the large bin is in the garage and using for the lights that we put up this year. The new containers hold just as much as the big one only using three instead of one but fit in the same spot.
I have a big long storage closet downstairs and all my decorating items go in there. I just keep it organized and not too much stuff. I clean it out and keep it current. I try and come up with new ways of doing things each year to make it easier for me especially as I get older. I have shelves also in that closet where items in boxes can go nicely. It is a well organized and thought out space.
If it is too much of a hassle then I will not decorate and I like to decorate for Easter and Thanksgiving and some of the other times too and the grand kids are little so it is fun for us but simple is best too.
I organize and move out old stuff each year so I keep things under control. I gave my daughter some items this year that were nice but just did not have the room and she does not have a lot of decorations and she wanted them. If she does not want then out it goes. Works for us.

I wrap the delicates in tissue paper and store everything in Christmas red and green Rubbermaid containers.

I use the ornament storage boxes, then for larger pieces I use individual boxes with bubble wrap. Some really breakable larger items I use the box it came in, with the shaped Styrofoam inserts. I have pared down on most of my décor, as I don't have much display space anyway, so this works for me. I also keep all my décor in the space under the stairs and it isn't really used for anything else, so no problem with other things crushing any of it.
