Re: How do you get your decorating inspirations?

I love vintage things, but I don't have the money for a house full of antiques. I watch old t.v. shows like Andy Griffith (my favorite) and try my best to recreate that feel of simpler times, using new and repurposed items.

Re: How do you get your decorating inspirations?

I have a decorator spirit, but I like to flip thru magazines to get ideas. I rarely ever watch any tv shows. HGTV bores the heck out of me. I sell out of an antique store so I do a lot of decorating and I love talking to our customers about what they like.

Re: How do you get your decorating inspirations?

I get my decorating ideas from magazines (Coastal Living & Country Living are two of my favorites), and I used to get a lot of ideas from HGTV when they first came on tv; not so much these days. Also, I sometimes get ideas from other homes that I'm in. Also, I think the style & "Bones of the house" itself can sometimes dictate the interior decorating. Finally, I get my decorating colors from colors I personally like in my clothing. If I like to wear a particular color, then I like that same color "around" me.

I agree with the above poster's statement that creativity is as unique as the individual. Decorate with colors and objects that make you feel good and imparts a warm & comfortable feeling in your home. That way you can never go wrong.

I like to walk around furniture stores and see how they are presenting the rooms of furniture. I did not get the decorating gene but I have a dear friend who is a decorator and I generally run everything past her before I do it.

Re: How do you get your decorating inspirations?

My house and my neighborhood are my inspirations.

Many of my neighbors' homes are very much the same as they were 100 years ago. The neighborhood association even published a book on the homes and their original owners.

The architect who designed my home had a lot of influences - but Arts & Crafts and the Roycroft Movement were his inspiration for my home. Luckily for me, there are plenty of old artifacts around to use in decorating.

I needed to get a runner for my front stairway and went to a local store that has been in the same family for 130 years. When I gave them my address - they opened a very old book. Unknown to me, they had provided floor coverings for my home since it was built in 1916 and had all the rooms and styles listed...right up to the previous owner who had installed wall to wall in 2004.

I got a runner that was the same pattern (black with tiny beige dots) that was in the home when it was new! They also knew that my staircase (which I had to restore) was originally painted white, so I went with that as well.

They literally had information on all the homes on my block...it was interesting reading!
