Re: Housewarming Gift Suggestions

The traditional house warming gift is a blessing for Flavor, Joy and Prosperity symbolized by salt, wine and bread.  You could make a nice presentation with homemade bread, a collection of salts, and, of course, a good bottle of wine.

Depending on the host's place in life at the time of the home purchase, sometimes just the most basic things can come in handy.

If it is a single person with their first home, or a young couple starting out that is financially strapped from either being very young and never having lived on their own, or paying lots of student loans etc. a very nice laundry basket filled with cleaning and household supplies might be well received.

Things that really add to the grocery bill, but everyone needs, like paper towels, tissues, bath tissue, liquid hand soap, dish soap and/or for the dishwasher, foil, plastic wrap, zip lock bags, cleansers and cleaners for the bathroom, a nice toilet brush set, window cleaner, some laundry soap and softener, nice microfiber towels, Supercloths, or Bio Cleaner cloths, and anything else you could think of to clean house.

Or do a linen version of this. Fill it with dish towels and cloths, a nice bath towel set and maybe some cream or white sheets for the bed (if you know their size). If you have a favorite linen spray, that would be nice in there too.

Or a garden version with some gardening tools in a caddy made for gardening, and then add a good shovel, rake, broom etc. especially if they are coming out of apartment life and have never taken care of a yard before.

The problem with housewarming gifts is that it depends on where people are at in their lives, what they already have or how very much they still lack when setting up that home (and that often has to do with their age, as if they are getting out on their own for the first time, it would be very different than people in their late 50's downsizing into a smaller place), so be sure to consider that factor when trying to choose something.

Jill Bauer often sells those sets of pretty rock soaps on her YHWJ shows. She says they look great in guest bathrooms.

@IamMrsG I don't know how I never heard of that before...thank you!  We have an older friend who just downsized into a brand new condo; he certainly doesn't need anything.  He likes to cook, he drinks wine, and believe it or not, we have a running joke about bread lol.  This will be perfect!

I have always thought that a great gift for a young couple (or anyone for that matter) would be an American flag kit.  I bet they don't have one yet.

Re: Housewarming Gift Suggestions

I loved the Soap Caddy that was recently on Evine, it was one of the Beekman's, it had the caddy which was cute, and the hand soap, lotion and dish soap and it was thinner so that it would not take up a lot of room on the counter, I believe it was about 34.00 or so. I also like the ideas of flamesless candles, or lanterns, and also I think beautiful drinking glass are always a good idea.....

Re: Housewarming Gift Suggestions

Since the couple has been married a year and already has their house, I would guess they probably have the basic household necessities.  I think a pretty picture frame makes a nice gift, but they might also appreciate a generic giftcard (Visa, AMEX) the could help towards the purchase of a more costly item they might have on their radar.

Re: Housewarming Gift Suggestions

Quite some time ago I stopped giving people stuff they have to display or do something with like plant, water, display or dust.  I've found that most people simply don't want stuff any more, and I am leading the pack on that one.  I have too much stuff and don't need more.

I think a gift card, a loaf of artisinal breads and maybe honey, gourmet coffee or tea, something like that, maybe bread and a small pretty cutting board, etc.  I buy pretty dish towels on clearance and keep some to put things like that in in the gift bag rather than tissue.  For a hostess gift, I sometimes give bakery breads or muffins, jam and maybe some coffee as a "breakfast for tomorrow morning" gift and they seem to like that!  It's a nice day-after-the-party treat!

I especially don't like for myself stuff I'm supposed to find a place for, keep out, and dust.

Re: Housewarming Gift Suggestions

Another thought would be something along the first Christmas they will celebrate in their new home.  The closer we get to the holidays the more excited they will be about decorating for all.  May be a few months away but how wonderful to have something from you for the future years to come.

Personalized for the home or the yard.

Re: Housewarming Gift Suggestions

When we moved into our first home my favorite housewarming gift was a door knocker with our name engraved on it. When we moved we brought it with us & bought a new one to leave behind. The one with our name is on our new house's door.
