Re: Help! Woodpeckers are eaing our house

Get a shotgun!

Seriously, you may want to have a pest control company look at the house because the woodpeckers are there looking for insects to eat.

Re: Help! Woodpeckers are eaing our house

Before I sold my log home I had to have 2 logs replaced because of woodpecker damage. I could hear some tapping and before I could get outside he had a hole started. I guess when I was out he came back. I got a woodpecker feeder and hung it in tree. No more damage. It was a suet holder that was wider at bottom because they hang and eat.

Re: Help! Woodpeckers are eaing our house

Woodpecker was drilling on the aluminum trim in a protected corner under the eaves. Just made this attractive nesting site UN-attractive with a portable radio, blinking X-mas lights, and a wad of cottton drenched in some stinky air freshner.
I keep a suet cage to attract birds year 'round, so I'm not surprised if they want to live near the food supply. They removed a rotting tree down the block, and the birds were looking for new housing.

@depglass

Do an internet search for woodpecker repellants and bird deterrents...........lots of sources are listed for dealing with them.

Woodpeckers are protected. No shotgun as someone stated. At least they were in TN.

We had one that pretty much ruined a post on the outside of our patio...We hung a metal pie pan near the corner....it must have scared him enough to leave and never come back.  We had a sizeable area to fix.

Re: Help! Woodpeckers are eaing our house

Better check your state laws before shooting a woodpecker.

We used to have wood siding on the house and had the same problem at certain times of year.  Sometimes it sounded like someone was using a jackhammer outside our bedroom window.  I've heard of placing fake snakes around, to ward off mice. It was suggested to me to try the same thing for the woodpeckers.  I was also told to string old CD's around the areas where the woodpeckers go.  It's kind of unsightly, IMO, but supposedly as the CH bounces and moves around the reflective side scares the birds away.  About 4-5 years ago we had vinyl siding put on the house and a side benefit was that the woodpeckers left.
