Re: Help! Any paint pros out there?

Don't know if someone has mentioned this, but when painting with semi-gloss, a short nap roller is what you need to use that you'll push onto the metal roller frame. If you use a roller meant for latex, which is really kind of fuzzy, you'll get those marks on your wall. There's a huge difference in the two rollers and the results that are achieved using semi-gloss.

I wouldn't use semi-gloss on walls. It will show every ding, dent, or drywall tape & nail pop.

I've always painted my kitchens and bathrooms in semi-gloss. It's a must-have for cleaning!

I always use eggshell.

You need to get the proper roller for semi-gloss.

What color are you using? Dark colors have a tendency to show roller marks.

Re: Help! Any paint pros out there?

You probably already know this, but when I first started painting, I would use whatever paint was on sale. I have learned that you must use quality paint and you always get better results. I have ever had a problem with semi-gloss paint with a name brand quality paint. Good luck with your project.

This may not be of help, but discovered today and I think its pretty:

Image result for www.jeannedarcliving linen

Jeanne D'Arc living vintage paint... but it has a soft, matte finish. I hope you get your project looking the way you are hoping for it to look.

Re: Help! Any paint pros out there?

Hello Everyone!

Thank you for the fantastic advice!!! I haven't asked for help here in years and boy you all came through. My home is all one color which is a white, just like chalk. Our tile is varied tans with brown veins so I chose a color called hopsack (warm light tan-ish.) I painted my last two homes with semi gloss because of the ability to wash it without damage. It is Valspar and is not that shiny, almost like satin when dry. The formula has changed with the primer added but it does not seem to be thicker. I am using a shorter knap roller and I think my second coat will look better even though it says one coat will do. I am not strong enough to really spread it thin so I don't think that is the problem.

Husband can not help me as he is disabled but he will watch as I apply a second coat tomorrow. We will read your kind suggestions and I hope I can be of help in the future here.

Grateful Cathy

You should have used a eggshell or satin instead of semi-gloss. You use semi-gloss on the trim.

I just painted bathroom cabinets and used semi-gloss with a foam roller. Turned out great.

I use the small flat pad with little wheels to cut in on walls. Then I take the pad and smooth it out so there is not a noticeable line.

I have done a LOT of painting so I hope this helps.

Yes this and all helped and if the second coat doesn't work I will try the foam. Thanks!

Keep a wet edge and do the whole wall from bottom to top without stopping. We had this problem with very high walls and this was the only way we got a good final product.

Hope I can do this! Love your sig!! Our Jackhound is our 4th rescue.

Thank you!

Re: Help! Any paint pros out there?

Never skimp on your brushes or rollers. If you're using the cheap stuff that came with the pan, roller kit, etc, pitch it and invest in a good quality set. It may set you back a few $$ but in the long run it's worth it.

I've used semi gloss with good success in my kitchens and bathrooms. In fact SW used to have a wall paint called Kids Room that was semi gloss. Tough as nails and scrubbed really well which is what it's made to do.

I'm not a fan of primer and wall paint all in ones. I've also switched to Behr and find it now far superior to SW.

Re: Help! Any paint pros out there?

I personally don't like paint with primer added. Through my experience I find that paint to be thick and sticky and it doesn't lay down as well as other formulas. The paint guy at SW told me that they are not going to use that formula any more. I also use HD Behr satin, even in my kitchen and bath, and it looks great. Just make sure to use a short nap roller and keep the edge wet.
