Do set a trap but do not use poison or it may die in the wall and it will stink something awful in the house for many, many weeks. Trust me, I did that and what a mintake it was!

@tsavorite--That's what I'm really afraid of--that I'm going to open one of my drawers in my bedroom and find one of them in there. I'd probably be very, very tempted to throw all the clothes in that drawer away. I know that's not practical (just wash everything), but I would certainly be tempted. They're just so DISGUSTING!

@NickNack and @Skyegirl21--I think I'm going to see about putting out poison, but outside if I can. As Skyegirl mentioned, I've read about the possibility of the mice going into the walls and dying rather than going back outside. So, I think around the outside of the house might be better, but I need to check it out first. We don't have any pets, so that's not an issue, but I need to find out if other wildlife that I don't wish to harm could be affected.

We plan to get some steel wool and use that, along with caulk, around the pipes. Haven't checked them out yet to see if that could be where the mice came in, but that's the only place we can think of. Don't see any little mouse "deposits" but it's going to be difficult to find them. Both our bathroom and my bedroom are carpeted (brown carpet in the bathroom), so hard to see. Plus, if the mice did their business under my furniture, won't be able to see it (or get to it to clean) because we just cannot move those pieces, too heavy. I really feel sickened by all of this. We keep wondering if our next-door neightbor moving out has anything to do with this. We never saw any mice until they emptied the house and left. They said they never had a problem (have a cat), but it's a strange coincidence.

Re: Have a mouse upstairs!

@qualityshopper  I was worried about the mouse dying in the walls, too.  The exterminator said they almost always go back outside to their nest to die.  If you put the poison outside your neighbor's cats or loose dogs could get it.

@NickNack--I've been checking online about poison bait traps, and it looks like the bait is actually enclosed inside some kind of box that has a small opening that a mouse can get inside, eat the bait, and then exit. The bait is inside and covered. Cats or dogs shouldn't be able to get into it (at least the type I'm looking at). I'm still researching about all of this.
