We have a lot of antique furniture that we never change and around that we have I guess cottage style. I do not change things up much. I still have the same oil paintings that we bought when we got married 31 years ago. My coffee table is also from 1983 and end tables are probably 20 years old. When we moved to Fl. 4 years ago we bought new bedroom set and LR set. DR set is 21 years old - it was a 10th anni gift from my parents.

Everyone of our friends who is always redecorating their home to have all the best and newest is now still working well past retirement age and complaining that they have not been 'lucky enough"" to be able to save enough to retire. Luck has nothing to do with it! I crack up when they blame the president because they can't retire instead of themselves and their total lack of restraint.

And these are your FRIENDS you are talking about?

It seems to me that in generations past, women held on to their home decor and furniture for much longer than many do today. We are a heavily consumer based society, and seem to feel the need to keep on buying, and home decor isn't excluded from this.

How is it with you and your home decor? Do you just add to what you have overtime, or make a real overhaul every so often? Have you changed your style drastically overtime, like from primitive country to modern, or something similar? Do you like to furnish your home with things handed down or from the past whether from your own family or acquire things second hand and decorate with a style from a certain period in history (recent or long ago)? Are you one to be on the cutting edge and have the newest and most modern? Do you just get tired of things, or never tire of what you have?

Please share.

We did a major furniture overhaul over the last couple of years because so much of our stuff was old and outdated and we were tired of it. We bought nice furniture to begin with, but it had worn out it's welcome and we wanted to update. We got new furniture for the guest room to make it more comfortable, redid the library with new book and display cases, and got a new dining table that it more comfortable to sit at than the old one.

We've also added a few new smaller pieces where they will help out with guests and traffic flow. We plan to move in a year or two and it was good to get things that will work better and be more versatile than some things we had. It was one of the best things we've done in a long long time!

Re: Has your home decor preferences changed drastically overtime?

I am really needing to replace a sofa in my living room and one in my den. However, when I look, the modern lines just do not appeal to me. I'm going to have one of the sofas re-upholstered. I like its look, and my house does not lend itself at all to the modern look. So, yes, I guess I can say I have the same taste in décor I always have.

No, what I like hasn't changed drastically. Although I tend to like some styles that don't necessarily go with other favorites so I end up not buying them.

Re: Has your home decor preferences changed drastically overtime?

I/we tend to keep furniture a long time. Our bedroom suite is as old as our marriage--almost 50 years old. Our guest bedroom suite was bought at an auction and is even older. Our living room furniture was new when we built our home 17 years ago. So, to answer your question, our furniture taste hasn't changed drastically.

However, I do change out smaller items more often. I have an eclectic collection of family heirlooms, other antiques and country style and traditional items. A home decor expert would probably throw out most of my things but I'm happy with them and that's all that matters. My decorating taste has become more "I could care less what other people have/want; I'll decorate with what makes me feel good." This is not to say that I'm not influenced by what I see/read on this forum. Remember the black and white bunny set? Got them; love them.

This year, I found lots of smaller decor items that I love so I bought more than normal. As a result my huge attic is in a huge mess with too much stuff. When the weather gets cooler and I can stand to be up there for more than a minute, I'll go through things and donate items I don't/won't use.

Re: Has your home decor preferences changed drastically overtime?

I like most decor styles, but I've chosen to use an eclectic mix of traditional furnishings in my house. I've added, upgraded or reupholstered as I needed to and could afford to, but always in the same general style. Like others that post here, I enjoy changing accessories and linens with the seasons.

I think I mentioned on another thread that I've never had much in the way of holiday decor because we lived in places with limited storage. Most of what I use for holiday decorating has been purchased in the last few years and a lot of it has come from QVC.

Re: Has your home decor preferences changed drastically overtime?

I have favorite pieces of furniture I never have tired of and don't want to get rid of. I bought my husband's grandmother's drop leaf oak table and chairs at an auction at their house after she died. I have always loved that table. It was my kitchen table for yrs. and then I added a dining room and have my mom's table in that room so the small drop leaf table went to the living room. I don't care which room it is in it always works for something. I put my stained glass lamp on it in front of the window and remove it for my Christmas decorating with my tree and village in November. I have a brass bed, a real brass bed, and have never tired of that either. I bought new end tables. The maple ones seemed out of style to me so I bought a black finish coffee table and end tables. I do replace things occasionally but mostly I love the pieces I have. My couch and love seat went out of style too so I replaced those.

Yes, my taste has changed as I get older. I find I like less clutter. I recently moved and got rid of quite a lot of things. I like the cleaner look. I do like the shabby chic/romantic/french country look but with a minimalist bent.

Re: Has your home decor preferences changed drastically overtime?

I buy quality furniture that lasts a long time. I replaced my 30 year old dinette table two years ago and just recently replaced all of my living room furniture. The couch and love seat were 10 yrs old, with little wear; the tables were from the 80's, but in great condition, so everything sold quickly. I want my house to be comfortable, not formal, and we surround ourselves with what we like. I decorate with family photos and inherited personal items; don't like lots of things hanging on my walls. I like the less is better plan in my home decorating.
