Once we finish purging in our basement, we need to do something with our basement floors. Hubby may have a plan, but I am thinking he does not. They are ugly, I don't think any cracks, but some rusty water from the Culligan Softener. and some stains from previous water leaks. We aren't going to finish it, but want it to look nice. We have a nice bright green outdoor rug under our Total Gym.

You know , this is something we have been considering. We don't have any cracks and the floor is in good shape, but has never been painted. I just hate to start- as it will then always have to be re-painted , again and again.
Hubby can get a little too creative sometimes
, so I am wondering if I should just" leave well enough alone."

The reason I'm responding to this post, is that I've sort of done a similar thing to an outside patio that was really looking ugly.
I sponge painted reddish brick shapes onto it, and it looked so much better, like an actual brick patio.
I will say that it did have to be repainted every 3 years, but it was exposed to the elements, and I don't think a garage or a basement every goes through that kind of weathering.
I have since moved to a new house, but looking at my garage floor , I'm thinking it might really benefit from my former sponge technique. If you are doing a basement or garage, definitely, it will last a long, long time.

Sponge painting- great idea! Our basement is a high traffic area, so that might be just what we need to do !

I want to do something with my cellar floor, but I'm scared to paint it. Growing up my father painted our cellar floor and it was high maintenance. It peeled and needed touch ups. Can't tell what kind if paint my father used though. He was known for mixing odds and ends together.

I painted my garage floor about 17 years ago and it still looks good except for where my kitty litter boxes are. There is quite a few scrapes and scratches from the litter. I made sure to use good quality paint made especially for concrete. Gail

Don't paint yourself into a corner. I was trapped for two days. The worst part about it was my family did not notice I was missing. Then my DH had to rescue me thru the basement window.
You'll probably want to use a sealant.

We painted our bare basement floor 17 years ago when we first moved in, mainly to seal it and to keep down the dust.
I just scrubbed the whole thing recently with a scrub brush and it still looks pretty good, It was really filthy, so I scrubbed it, prepping it to paint again, but I don't really think I need to paint it for a long time yet. We used Benjamin Moore Epoxy Floor & patio cement paint (it's NOT the two-part epoxy you have to mix).. It goes on like silk, goes a long way and lasts a long time..I also used this same paint in our previous home on the basement floor..
There is only one really tiny spot where the paint lifted slightly..otherwise it looks great..I would recommend this paint if you're considering doing your basement floor..I am quite happy with the result and will buy again if need be....
