I will also add that you do want a professional who installs doors all day long.
I would not go with a general handyman.
I have heard too many times in my neighborhood about bad installs and problems with damage when trying to install new entry doors in my community.
I've had both my doors replaced in the past by different companies and they can be fiddly, especially if your house is old.
I've watched both times and it's not as easy as it looks and it's definitely a 2 person job.

Nice looking door. Mine is mahogany fiberglass.
P.S. Eddy has sinced rescued me. He's an Amstaff/Cocker who looks like a black lab! I'm sure he could pick out a nice door for you, but I'd have to go along - he's Mama's sidekick!![]()
Good luck with your door - enjoy it for many years to come!

Our neighbor wanted a new front door with a glass panel. The price they were quoted was $10,000.

The price is just about standard in my area. I had to replace my front door, add a transom at the top, and replaced the framing around the old door. The cost of installation, which took pretty much all day long was included in the price.
I would recommend a professional installer as well.

Seriously the county wanted a permit to replace the front door. Ummmmm NO
@Miss Pepsi just a way to get more money from you.

If I were you, I'd go with the less expensive door. Like you said, do you REALLY need 30 years of wear out of it.
Secondly, Lowe's and Home Depot sub jobs out. They do NOT have their own contractors. While I don't want to say anything bad about someone, all I can say is not everyone does the best work. I know several circumstances where DH has been called in to "correct" the trashy work done by Lowe's and HD contractors. So, be careful.
If you have your own handyman, that's the best route. And, if you shop your own door online, I would suggest you let him take a look at it to make SURE the door will work in your space. Again, DH has been called in many times to make something work when homeowners just bought what they liked, rather than what would install properly.
Let us know what you decide.
@Witchy Woman also when subcontracting out they tack on a small percentage for their trouble.

Both DH & I met with a home remodeler last Friday. #1 on the list was to replace the sliders in my sunroom. But while he was here, we figured we'd get quoted on the front door/storm door & the back door/storm door.
We were shocked at the total amt. under $28K! He did say they only deal with a top notch vendor & it's all custom. And, believe me, it was.
The slider we did purchase & is on order, it was necessary. We also ordered the front door/storm door (but I backed out of it later that day.) Just didn't fit my budget.
DH is already retired & my goal to retire is next March (if all goes well with 401K, savings.) We didn't want to have any bills with this project & wanted to pay cash.

..UPDATE: We went to a local "Builders Mart" just a few miles away in our community. The carpenter that we know buys from them. We have picked out the door and sidelite. The price for the door ( if we go Fiberglass is $1450). If we go steel it is $1342. It's the same Masonite door we looked at with the $5500 quote. Of course that was including installation. Now........ we are just waiting to see how much our carpenter will charge for installing it. We are very pleased with this new price on the door. I'll let you know when I can tell you the total cost of the new quote with installation. You have been a great help to us. DH is impressed! He has "listened to every post"! I think he's kind of surprised how much you ladies know about doors! Thanks from both of us.

For me, I learn as I go from my own mistakes and experiences and I learn lessons from mistakes my neighbors have made.
