These homeowners found the right designer-- Susan Ferrier--  for their high ceilinged house.  She's known in the design world for her bold, larger-than-life visions!  Not for everyone, but so visually interesting.

I love the misty paintings carried as a theme throughout the house, which was created by architect Bobby McAlpine in Mountain Brook, Alabama.

Yes, yes, the mullioned windows would be hard to clean-- but I'm enjoying the light-filled space.

I like that this dining area is intimate;  you have the high, expansive areas in other rooms, but this is cozy.  Gorgeous mirror.

I love what Veranda Magazine said about Ferrier's approach to this house:

Designer Susan Ferrier reacts to strongly masculine architecture like a grande dame storming a men's club. Give her empty rooms composed of virile materials and strict, cerebral grids, and she'll treat them with furnishings that are boldly voluptuous, a tad rustic, and movie-star glamorous.

---- Veranda Magazine

She definitely has a strong vision, best seen in these "baronial" type houses, but brings a fairy tale quality as well.

Sometimes you can see a designer's decorating personality in how they present themselves.  I love her bold jewelry:

A glimpse of a few other rooms from other houses, which further indicate the broad strokes of her highly individual style:

Love the box paneling in this house's entry, which seems to be a trademark, and the presence of a few vintage, oversize accessories, like the chunky trunks.

This was either an inspiration room for her, or one she did-- couldn't tell from the article I read.  Either way, it's got her moody vibe all over, this time in dark mode.

The framed prints echo the warm tones of the wood ceiling in this family room she did;  the blue windows are such a fun surprise.

@Oznell I really like the house!  Beautiful, and warm to me.  But with the furnishings I would want to change things up, bring in new, keep some of the existing but move them around to a different positioning or different rooms.

@Oznell ............The house is beautiful.  I do believe that now days the mullion bars (aka mutton bars) are in between glass panes, so cleaning would not be an issue.

I don't know it just all seems so cold and formal and pretentious and boring.

dont' know what else to say.

Still, @Oznell, I do appreciate your comments and joy in discovering these things.

I love windows...lots and lots of windows.

My house has floor to ceiling windows.

My late husband decided we should move.  I wasn't interested since the house we were living in was totally paid for.

He wanted me to go over in a part of Virginia that had huge and beautiful homes.

I had no intention of moving, as many of you ladies know, sometimes to keep the peace, we go through the motions.

These houses were huge.  They had panic rooms, panic buttons, you name it.

But one house I looked at ..well..there were two..gave me the creeps.

One house had curved windows.  Yep!  The inside appeared round, but it didn't look like it from the outside.  That was all brick.

What creeped me out was the entire house was white...white everywhere.  White leather furniture, white wall to wall carpeting, white kitchen.

It didn't look like anyone lived in but, but I was told they did.  They must not have eaten a meal in this house!

The other creepy house was all black.  Everything black.  The living room had black and white striped wall to wall rugs.

That was the house that had a large red button in the hallway!   I put my hand on it (not intending to push it) when the realtor said...no..yelled "DON'T TOUCH THAT"!

She said it was a panic button in case there was an emergency it went directly to the police.  OK (I'm thinking..does this house get burglarized so much they have a direct line to the cops)...

Well needless to say we didn't move.

When I see these lovely houses, I'm brought back to those (houses).

Then I think, with him dying I'd still owe money on those houses.  I'd have had to sell the monstrosities.

Yep!  Some things just work out.

Come on people.  I'll bet you all have stories of houses or things you could have bought or done...but didn't.  Eventually, it turned out it worked out in your favor.

@Oznell - I really like the decor of this home- especially the 1st image. I also liked that dramatic dark room with the enormous blue and white ginger jar.

I do like the use of the color blue throughout, the beautiful paintings, the windows, all very appealing.  I like some of the furnishings but not all.  The family room is very pretty as is the dining area.  Having all that space is always something I love in homes, old homes.  The challenge of furnishing them and having the room to do so is for me;

I like it all except for the dark room. Actually we could have a smaller house but we are both attached to our home.

Re: HOUSE ON A GRAND SCALE

I like a good many of the elements employed but certainly not all of them and not so sure I necessarily like the way they're combined. I am wild, however, about the oversize floral vase and like the moody room in which it's placed.
