I have a GE builder grade top loader and I have to take things like guilts to the laundromat as it will not spin them. However, items like jeans are ok as long as I don't do too many at a time.

I just looked up my info on my washer. It is a Whirlpool, top loading, that I purchased in 2007 and I have not had one problem with it.

On mine, I just hit "pause???" and then I add sock, and hit the button again. Check your owner's manual, just in case. I have one from Sears.
