Yes! @Dusty1 Running a carpet cleaner, with the heat, will also weaken the pad and make it brittle over time. I'm in the same situation with my dog. I use a steam cleaning carpet machine quite often and although my old carpet still looks great, the pad underneath is falling apart.

@shaggygirlI LOVE my Shark. But, I will say if I empty the canister & go back & revacuum over the same area the canister is full of dirt, again.

I vacuum frequently & have had my vacuum for 2 years. I swear it is pulling up dirt from under the house! How can I still be so dirty? Ew.

I had that sort of thing happen to me. What I found out was that the padding under my old carpet was getting crumbly and falling apart. Then when I vacuumed, the crumbled tiny pieces of padding would get sucked through the carpet itself. That made me realize just how old my carpet really is...LOL! @Dusty1

@SilleeMee  Aha, so that's the culprit! I never would have thought of that but now that you say it, I have to agree that it makes perfectly good sense.

So here's the thing. (do I sound like Mary Beth?) What the Shark pulled up was amazing considering I used my Oreck yesterday. Did a second go round and yes it did pull up some more but not a whole lot. I'm quite pleased. I will say though that as expected I did find not being able to let go and have it stand upright on it's own was a bit of a pain but I'll get used to that I'm sure.

On the con side. Whoever decided to call this ultra-light was full of baloney. This model is not for anyone who has any kind of shoulder issue. I have had problems with my right shoulder on and off over the years and have to be aware of it when doing certain things not to stir it up. With this vac I definitely felt it in that shoulder and switched hands a lot. I think it's because of all the heavier power parts being at the top of the stem rather than down by the vac head. It's not enough to make me return it, just to be aware of how I'm using it.

@shaggygirl

"I think of it might have read that if you unhook the top thingy and store it on the stem thingy closer down near the vac head it might stand on it's own."

I keep reminding everyone here that the Shark vacuum sucks up "hell."  So don't be surprised if one day Lucifer Morningstar is smiling at you from inside the canister.

I got a new Shark, too! Mine is a corded upright. It's the newly-designed Navigator Zero-M Lift-Away. The brush roll is made to never get hair wrap! ...and that is true. I have been using it for a month and no hair gets wrapped around the roller. Not even my long hair or my golden retriever's hair either. This is a dream come true. Best vac ever.

@SilleeMee

Did your Shark come with attachments? What brand of carpet steamer do you own please?

Thank you

Yes, my new Shark came with a crevice tool that converts to a dusting wand with bristles. It also came with a flat lint/pet hair remover tool that has the red velvet strips on the underside that catches the hair/lint on upholstery and gets sucked into the vac from there.

I own an older Hoover SteamVac Spin Scrub Deluxe...it's old but works great. @butterfly123

I just replaced the padding under an area rug.  It was creating a lot of dirt from disintegrating.  I think it was just age.

just received my shark ion flex cordless just arrived and i charged the battery and tried it for the first time today. my sweet Charlotte likes to eat her teeny kibble by removing from the bowl and eating from the floor, so i get teeny pieces of kibble everywhere.  my regular shark had difficulty picking up these little pieces on the tile floor, but this one did great on the hard floor, lower suction setting. on the high suction setting the vacuum ran away from me. Charlotte scooted out of the way with every pass
