Re: Getting Overwhelmed Picking Out Countertops

I never had trouble with laminate.  Had it for 40 years before I got new kitchen last year.  I got laminate again.  Love it.  As a matter of fact my old laminate looked good.  It did not look worn at all.

We recently moved.  In my old house we had dark polished granite (Emerald Pearl which for all intents and purposes appears black.)  When I was designing the kitchen here I was determined to not have dark granite again because of the maintenance.  Every crumb, every droplet of water, absolutely everything shows.

In my new kitchen I have Alaska White granite on the perimeter, and River White on my island.  NOTHING shows on it.  I can't even tell what's on them until I clean them every evening and look at the cloth.  Best decision for me.

I looked forever before deciding on a granite that I loved.  My counters do not have to be sealed... ever.  They have a lifetime seal on them.

I chose a dark granite color.  If I had to do it all over again, I would choose a light color.  Dark granite shows every smear and fingerprint.  It's a chore to keep them shiny with no dust or smudges showing.

This was another thing we were warned about.  We know a couple of people who chose very dark.  One chose a black granite.  they all said they spend a ton of ton cleaning and wiping it because it shows everything.

We heat our house with a woodburning stove so it gets dusty.  I cannot imagine what dark counters would look like.  LOL

Sorry my response came before the quote.

@faeriemoon, I remember those colors as we were looking. They are beautiful.  I bet your kitchen is stunning.

@faeriemoon, I concur with @Lipstickdiva.  Your colors are beautiful and exactly what I would choose.  I think my sister has Alaska White with a stacked stone backsplash.  It is beautiful!

WE had Wilsonart laminate countertops in our Pa. homne for 18 years and they were still in perfect condition but we remodeled the kitchen so they were replaced with new laminate.Had that 10 years - no problems.

@151949: Thank you. I will look at the laminate. I really want to make the most improvements within my budget. The contractors allowance for appliances were on the low side and will probably have to include more money since I want a double wall oven, I need this because health issues bending over. Re: Getting Overwhelmed Picking Out Countertops

When you start looking at the laminate they have now a days you will be amazed how much it looks like real stone but is much less expensive.Of course a lot depends on the size of your kitchen but our builder charged $10,000 to upgrade to granite and the ones he offered were not IMO very attractive. No way could we pay $10,000 for countertops.

Re: Getting Overwhelmed Picking Out Countertops

@Winkk....when we remodeled our kitchen I really, really wanted quartz, I am not a fan of granite, way to busy for my taste.  The quartz is beautiful but way to expensive.

In a round about way to answer your question, we ended up with a High Definition Laminate, it is white  with a very subtle texture. I am happy with it but still long for quartz, ha!
