We would like to switch our wood burning fireplace to a gas one. Is there one brand that you prefer over others? One you would never want again? I just want to make a good and an informed decision. Thanks for your input!

we got one years ago and love it don't remember the brand. I didn't get the remote control for it and now wish I had.

Petersen Real-Fyre has by far the best logs and rep. So nice to flick a switch and have a realistic looking fire with heat.

Gas logs don't come as an insert. You buy the logs and have someone like a plumber install the gas line to the logs. Do you have gas to the fireplace now? If not, running a gas line can be rather pricey. I paid over $600., 15 years ago to run the line about 30ft. from the water heater. Inserts are electric and have a very realistic and mesmerizing artificial flame, give off a little heat.

We moved in here with a two story stone fireplace. DH wanted gas logs, as we had them before. We have also had a regular fireplace and a wood burning stove in the past. They were pretty, but didn't give off any heat, even with a ceiling fan. So DH decided to get a gas stove insert to the fireplace. It's great! Most chilly evenings you will find three of our kitties and one tired mom (!) curled up in front of it. It heats the room well, and has been wonderful for all of the winter power outages we seem to get. Our insert is by Vermont Castings. Our first wood stove was from them too. Smile

We do NOT have a gas line to the fireplace now. We realize that will be one expense involved in addition to the insert and the installation. I am guessing we will have 40 feet to run it. We have several places in town that sell the inserts and it gets confusing listening to their sales pitch. I do want a remote for it and mostly just want to sit in front of a fire when it is cold and deary outside with winter coming now. Having it give off some heat is a nice option, too. I do not care about adjusting the flame height.

In my previous home I switched from a pellet stove insert over to a gas fireplace insert & had to have the gas line plumbed into the fireplace. I got tired of dealing with the wood pellets & cleaning out the ashes. I don't recall what it cost, but it wasn't much & the guy ran the gas line over from the gas meter & up into the fireplace box & the stove place then did the install of the insert. The gas insert I got was a Regency brand & it worked great & looked really nice.

That is what I am hoping to do, as I, too, am tired of the mess a wood one makes.....and sometimes I want a fire for a short time and do not want to wait for one to go out and worry about the ashes.
