I have a lighted china cabinet that has a rheostat in one of the door hinges to control turning the overhead lights on & off. One of the lights went out & when I looked at it, i discovered that it had overheated & burned the wire that attached to the socket all the way thru. I thought maybe I could take it out & get a new one at Lowe's or Home Depot & splice it in to fix it, but they didn't even have that size of socket. It's like a small halogen lamp sized socket.

Does anyone know who does this type of repair work? It's not like I can take the top of my large china cabinet off & haul it to a repair place to get it fixed, so i would need to have someone come out & fix it. I checked with one local furniture store & asked if they had repair people that can come out fix electrical stuff inside of furniture & they said they did not. I can't find any listings for furniture repair folks that can fix electric stuff in the phone book, they seem to just fix wood parts, but not the electrical things that can go wrong. I'm not sure if I need a regular electrician for something like this, it seems like it would be more of a specialized type of repair person, but maybe not. It may need to be totally rewired, which may be the best option from a safety standpoint, but I don't know who to call for this sort of thing.

Do you know a good handyman sort of person you could call? An electrician would probably charge a fortune just to show up and would probably consider a job like this below his dignity. Are you in the Phoenix area? I used to have a good handyman who moved to Phoenix but I don't know how you'd find him especially since he just used a cell phone.

Find a lamp repair place in your area. They will either have the parts or may know someone who can fix it. You might also try an antique furniture restoration shop.

I hired a carpenter who was able to repair more difficult jobs. I had a huge bow window that had been damaged by the blizzards in the past winter and the wood was warping, etc. I also had a weathervane on top of a cupola on the garage roof that was in tatters that he repaired. This guy liked the unusual repairs so that's the person I would try to find. You might have to hire two people--one for the wood repair and an electrician. If you are lucky, the carpenter can repair the wood to the degree that you just need to splice your wire and buy the bulb.

I'm a big user of the BBB website and the local paper and website. You can get a wider list of names if you have these options in your area.

I'd call an electrician but then I live with one so I don't have to pay for it.

Only an electrician is qualified to tackle this situation and you wouldn't want anything less for wiring inside your home.

an electrician in our area runs 100 to 150 an hour. They get a lot done in an hour though!

go to yelp.com to see if there's a good electrician in ur area, who's licensed. I found a good carpet cleaner and a window washer on this site - and they charged reasonable fees. When u call several electricians, tell them the problem on the phone and see if they could give u an estimate. If not, ask if they charge to come out. You don't want to get ripped off.

I did the same thing except with the cord coming back through the top part. I put it too tight to the wall and split it.I called a electrician he was very reasonable and fixed it by rewiring it.

I am now having a set of led lights put into my new hutch which was bought at a consignment shop and does not have lighted shelves...tried those stick up led lights....junk!

My electrician will also rewire my under the counter lighting after my kitchen is complete.

He gave me a ball park figure $150. I guess it depends on area and electrician. The plumber fee for my kitchen is the one really scaring me!!! Didn't get his price yet!
