I have a 19 year old Kenmore set and just had the dryer vent cleaned out.

The guy told me it is in excellent shape and it will outlast newer models.

I agree! They do NOT make them like they used to. Have it serviced and keep it going!

I have LG and love them. Also heard great things about Samsung. I notice lots of recommendations on here for Speed Queen but personally not familiar.

Based on my expereince, I would say do NOT buy any LG appliances!  They have very limited & very poor service.   I live in a major metropolitan area and there are only 2 businesses that service LG washers & dryers.  The both knew I was at their mercy and they enjoyed their power.  It took 4 weeks to get someone to show up and then they had to order the parts and then we had to rebook the actual repair visit – it took 6 weeks… RIDICULOUS!!!!!   I could not use the machine during all that time – had to schlep out to the laundromat (which is icky, a hassle and expensive).  Save yourself a lot of grief and eliminate LG from your list right from the start.  Whichever brand you get, you are smart to go with few whistles & bells – less to break down.  Once you pick one, before you buy check to see what king of service is actually available in your area – get feed back on the repair business = then make your final decision on the brand.  Also, you need to keep the door of the washer open when not in use now-a-days or it can grow mold around the seal of the door.  It helps the mold issue some not to use any fabric softener – use white vinegar instead.  You can get it by the gallon cheap at Costco.  Vinegar will soften your clothes, clean the machine and nothing smells like vinegar when the wash is done.

@Havarti  That's weird. My LG is two years old. Not a single issue. My daughter's is almost three. Again, not one issue. Are you doing the recommended maintenance on schedule?  Of course, I'm sure all manufacturers have duds. Also LG has phone diagnostics though I've never had to use it. Hhgregg, Lowes, Home Depot, Best Buy, etc., all here provide repair service for all models they sell. Unless you purchase from a small appliance store, why would you have to find someone to service LG?  I'm confused. I would assume the best price in a major metro area would be a major store.

@Reba055   That may be how it is where you live, but here there are only two companies that service LG and all those other stores refer service to those two businesses.  I am happy you have not had a problem and I hope you never do.   You may find out that it is not as simple as it once was to get prompt repairs…I hope it never happens that way for you.  I was just passing along information that could be worth checking out in her area before she selects any brand (not just LG). I purchased mine through Best Buy and even purchased the extended warranty – it didn’t help get prompt service in this area.

@Havarti Wow, that is good to know. I would have an issue with Best Buy for sure since you purchased an extended warrantee. Actually we stopped shopping with Best Buy and now use Hhgregg because we had an issue with service at Best Buy and they got to where they weren't as knowledgeable as they once were. Hhgregg has really impressed me with customer service.

You've piqued my curiosity. I'm going to ask around about service here. You are correct I that I haven't had an issue therefore no service calls.

Thanks.

If I got a front loading washer, I'd want the one that has a little door inside the door that allows you to add a piece right after it started, or if they make it, one that doesn't lock right away.  When I had a front loader, I'd often find a sock that I dropped on my way to the laundry room.  No matter how careful I was and double checked, I'd often find a piece that could've gone in that load but now had to wait for another load.  The door was locked so I couldn't add it.

A couple of years back I just 'had' to have the "latest and greatest" so my wonderful hubby told me to just pick out the washer I wanted and of course it was a front loader. BIG MISTAKE!!! I soon learned that you can't open it to add what you might have forgotten and you cannot soak clothes in it....I sometimes soak clothes if they are especially dirty or stinky or to help with stain removal. Then we had a couple of bad storms and our electricity kept going out....it fried the washers computer....it was going to cost more to repair than to purchase a new one so I went and picked out an 'old fashioned' top loader, nothing fancy and I am very happy with that choice. Good luck on your search!

My Whirlpool front loader is about7-8 years old now, and I still like it a lot.  It apparently has some features that some of you say are missing from front loaders.  Mine does have  a soak cycle.  It has a button that can pause the machine, and by holding the button longer, will unlock the door to add clothes, although I haven't tried to do that once the suds start appearing in the window.

My primary reason for wanting a front loader was my assumption that it would help preserve clothing.  It doesn't agitate as vigorously or otherwise cause unnecessary wear-and-tear , friction or fading on fabrics.    At least that's what I think, anyway.  So far I'm happy with owning the machine, especially for washing certain lingerie, bedding and linens.
