Consider a runner on the middle of the stairs.  When talking about resale, I think how something has been cared for is more important than what it is made of. I've seen terrible looking decks in which the owner says it's real wood instead of that composite stuff. Well, personally, the composite stuff looks better and is easier to care for. Same holds true for inside floors, at least for me.
