Flatware choices-invest in a nice set or not?

I am moving into a new home soon and, believe it or not, it is the first real space I have ever had that I can decorate and do whatever I want to.

I bought my first real dinnerware set by Kate Spade this week and have been going back and forth about flatware to match it. Each time I find a nice set there's inevitably reviews about it not holding up.  Some few and far between but they are there.

What do you guys think about investing in a nice set versus getting something cheap and then when it wears out buy another?

I've been trying to be an adult and get nice stuff now that I have the appropriate space for it.  I've bought my first stainless steel cookware and now nice tableware.

I don't mind investing if I get something I love and it will be hang around a while but I'm not sure if that is a waste of money that should go elsewhere if it's never going to get passed down or rarely seen.

Do you invest in your flatware or just grab a set that will do for now?

I got mine at Bed Bath and Beyond. I believe it is Reed and Barton. It's 15 to 20 years old and held up great.

I think buying the best quality you can afford is always the way to go if it's something you will be using every day long term. here's part of an article I thought was interesting that might help you make your choice.

(sorry about the print size. not sure what happened there Smiley Happy )

Re: Flatware choices-invest in a nice set or not?

@Laura14 Congratulations on the new home!!!!! I remember my first home and all the silverware was plastic Smiley LOL..I wished I had invested in a good set of silverware...during this time Reed & Barton was a popular brand and I decided to wait.  Years later, I did invested in Reed & Barton and discovered the pieces offered years earlier were not quite the same as the new pieces i.e. the earlier spoons were much bigger and were not etched with the country it was made in on the back.  My mother still has her first collection of Reed & Barton and the spoons can dip frozen ice cream without breaking/bending...Since you have invested in great dinnerware I think you should also invest in the silverware..Enjoy your new home!

SN: I did purchase the Reed & Barton from QVC..and recently purchased a set offered on the Q from Lenox that was on clearance for everyday use.

Another vote for Bed Bath & Beyond - Oneida's Everdine Flatware.

Can't beat their never expiring 20% coupons as well as their never expiring return policy.

@Laura14 I've had most of mine for 25+ years....it's Oneida from Walmart! It's held up through countless dishwasher cycles and still looks good. It also has a nice weight in my hand.

I've thought about buying a "nicer" set from time to time, but this has held up so well I really don't need to.

Have fun decorating your new home...congratulations!

@Laura14   I would try to get a good 18/10 stainless set in a pattern you like. . They are far more durable . I think you would be happier  with that to go with your new dinnerware than a cheap set that will soon tarnish and bend.  I think Macys has a lot on sale right now online with their coupon. So happy for you.

If you will use it go for it.

I dont have any fancy dishes, silverware, china etc.

I don't even have a nice set of matching glasses when people come over to eat. I use old plastic tupperware cups. LOL!!!

I don't like fancy formal stuff in my house or in my clothing.

Don't have any use for it.

Re: Flatware choices-invest in a nice set or not?

@Laura14  So nice to see you again! Have wondered how you were doing.

Please buy 18/10 stainless steel flatware. It's safe for your health; no base metals which are dangerous. I do think QVC is expensive. Try Target for reasonable prices.

You'll be able to pick up the individual pieces for heft. Notice the feel. Some will feel flimsy, which results in bent tines on the forks. Others will feel heavier, which will be comfortable and durable when cutting salads or meat. Go for the weighty ones which will last (won't bend out of shape). Buy knives with serated edges for easy cutting. A set with soup spoons is necessary (especially if you live in a cold climate and eat soups).

I believe Target may have four or six setting sets, rather than the 12 sets. If you don't have much company go for the smaller sets. Usually there are salad forks, dinner forks, knives, teaspoons, soup spoons and dessert spoons included in each place setting. Sometime an iced tea spoon is included. Styles vary from simple to ornate.

Best wishes on your new place! You can find flatware to last you the rest of your life by following these easy tips. Best wishes, Laura.
