Proper wood burning techniques ensure that wood is burned cleanly with little negative impact to the environment. These include thoroughly drying out wood before it is burned, proper storage of wood, not using painted wood, some types of home flooring such as plywood, other types of wood not suitable for home fireplaces, and using a wood fireplace according to manufacturer's instructions.

*

There are even wood burning fireplaces today that filter particulates from rising up into the air.

*

I imagine many people with fireplaces don't know this.

*

Look up EPA, United States Environmental Protection Agency, under "Burn Wise."

All the big cities that are located at the foot of mountains like Los Angeles, Phoenix, Albuquerque, Denver, Salt Lake City, have bad problems at times with an accumulation of smog that gets trapped. Some of this is caused by fireplace burning. Albuquerque used to have "No Burn Nights", although they seem to have discontinued that in recent years.

.

I've noticed when I've been in El Paso, early in the morning, A heavy layer of smog suddenly appears over Juarez, Mexico across the border as people light their fireplaces and wood stoves on which they cook.

I live in northern CA and we have a lot of "spare the air days" that we are not allowed to burn in our fireplaces. Obviuosly fireplaces create smoke and cause pollution to some extent.

Burning wood vs burning natural gas and it's effects on the environment is a topic of much debate. The answers you get will depend on who you ask.

Knowing that wood burning for heat and food has been in existence for longer than we have recorded, I enjoy my fire place.

However, I am mindful of windy days, and naturally do not use it for safety reasons.

I am also careful on smoggy days, but they occur mostly during the heat of Summer, when I would not use my fire place any how.

My asthma cannot tolerate the smell of a fireplace. It triggers huge attacks. I loved them when I was young but now I can't tolerate it and we had ours converted to gas logs which we have used twice in 15 years.

I'm not a big-time environmentalist. I think God has a plan for the earth and His plan will happen regardless of what we do. I'm not a litterbug nor do I overbuy plastic products, and the fact that this country advocates for a clean environment, has megatons each day of polyester and plastic coming here from China and while that is not great for our country inasmuch as the ships don't run on paddles, polyester and plastic are not made of thin air and our country encourages this trade and the biggest producers of products such as this hawk for the environment, i.e., Mr. Amz, he flies around in private jets as do all the environmentalists. I hate that we bag our garbage in plastic and send to China while we are making them the contempt of the world. I think our country and all that are in government are hypocrites. Just MHO. I guess you have yours and you can state it if you wish. p.s. We didn't use Pampers for our babies and neither did my children and they hung them on a line, not put in dryers to use gas or electricity. Now that I am older, I do use the dryer but I am forced to as my community would not allow a clothes line anyway. Any time there is a world meeting on the environment, hundreds of private jets fly to places all over the globe with 2-3 of the company's executive personnel. How many megatons of carbon is that and we are fueling a war between Russia and Ukraine that is not exactly healthy for the environment. We are killing ourselves with our approach to world trade and wars.
