YouTube has some interesting videos comparing the 2018 to the 2017 model, Yikes, what a difference. There is also an interesting take on why they completely redesigned the 2018 tub....Speed Queen is stopping production of the residential front load washer so they modified that tub & put it in the top loader & when those tub parts run out they will stop making the residential top loader too...but is it true? The 2018 washer also has a locking lid & set water levels... it's expensive so smart to get feedback before buying, Good Luck.

I need to investigate why washer quality and offerings has been going backwards instead of forwards. Is it legislation and environmental pressure? My 4 year old Kenmore/LG was premium level but parts could not be supplied so I had to replace. Went to GE with agitator. It goes off balance and pounds with queen size set of flannel sheets...even at sheet setting. My 15 year old Kenmore never balked. What has happened to the washer industry!

Department of Energy made standards changes for laundry and dish washers in 2014. Still investigating. Can’t find much updated info on Speed Queen website.

IMO - and the opinion of my cousin the appliance repair man - that part of the decrease in quality has to do with increasing profit - doesn't it always? The use of plastic instead of metal parts! Also the customers want and are attracted to electronics on their appliances these days. However, the electronics frequently break down and then require very expensive replacement parts. Why do people think they need electronics in a washing machine? Last is the many environmental laws governing water use, water temps etc. The simple mechanical washers that rarely ever broke down and could be easily fixed are now dinosauers.Too bad - they did a very good job.

Precisely my point. Washers gave been very efficient and now they can’t perform tasks as they used to. Washing sheets should be a given. I understand going to commercial laundry for comforters and pillows. How is that saving energy when we have to do double rinses and wash less in “full” loads. I notice more wear and tear on fabrics too.

I agree - now that I have a machine that barely uses any water I have to do twice as many loads. How does that save water. !?!?

Government regulations is what happened to the washer industry.   As for that GE that gets unbalanced, that is exactly why I gave up on GE appliances.  The washer was the first appliance that turned me against the brand.   My washer and dryer were in the basement in my previous home and I was running up and down the stairs all the time trying to stop it from dancing across the floor before it reached the end of the hose and pulled that loose.  And then it was the dryer with all the plastic parts that would break.  After that I swore I'd get all of them out of my house.  This house is GE free.  But now that GE has sold its appliance division to Haier, a Chinese company, they might be even worse than before.
