My fan just went on --- it's in the furnace, which is in my attic. It's blowing cool air thru the vents - and my thermostat is off. It's very windy outside and probably caused it. Has anyone experienced this? Should I be calling a handyman - and what's the problem?

We have extremely high winds here in Orange County and our fans are blowing too from the wind. It will be 100 degrees here today.

If you have your system set on "heat" or "A/C", the system, including the fan, will kick on if the temperature gets above or below the set temperature. There's often a separate switch for the fan itself, which usually can be set for "on" or "auto". If the fan is set for "on" it runs all the time to circulate air, although the heat or A/C units may not be on. If the fan is set on "auto", the fan will kick on when the heat or A/C come on.
If you still can't figure out why the fan is on, it's probably time to call your climate control contractor! We usually have them check and service our system every fall before heating season starts and every spring before A/C season starts -- a good way to be sure your system is in good shape and can operate efficiently and safely.

I was lucky that my gardener came over today. I don't have air conditioning and never use the heater --- and the thermostat is always off. He explained that - at the top of the chimney, there's an opening -- and when the wind blows, the fan turns on in the furnace. I've been living in this house almost 13 yrs and it never happened before. A few hours ago, the wind subsided -- and no more noise.

Santa Anna's in April is very strange.

I lived in So Cal for 48 years & always hated the Santa Ana winds. We had two electric fans in the attic that automatically came on when a certain temperature was reached in summer to cool the attic. When the Santa Ana winds came they would blow the fan blades. I just got back from Riverside & the winds were terrible.
