@Desertdi   Sounds to me like you're just trying to keep burglars away.

I have a fine collection of front door wreaths.  Does that count?

My family never decorated for any season except Christmas and I still don't see people doing a lot of seasonal decorating.  I think, thanks to Valerie, it's become a one-upmanship activity among QVC viewers with elaborate decor in every room of their homes for every season and holiday.  It sort of boggles the mind.

@Kachina624 I just wonder where people put all this stuff!

Re: Fall decorating question

We never decorated when I was growing up for fall, only Christmas.  I started about 5 years ago when I wandered into a Pier 1 and discovered beautiful glass pumpkins.  That was my undoing. I went nuts over the next couple of years with Thanksgiving plates, table runner, wreaths for over the fire place and front door.  My obsession continued through Christmas and by the time they closed All my decorations were from there. Just about everything from QVC was purged.  Special pieces only.  I have saved money since they closed but I'ts not the same.  I miss that store still.

Re: Fall decorating question

I decorate for every season. I fill in little touches for St.Paddy's, Valentine etc. I love to decorate and by the time one holiday/season is over I am ready to move to the next one. I get tired of looking at the same stuff day in and day out.

Re: Fall decorating question

I didn't decorate for fall, @YellowLabMom .  Then hubby gave me a very pretty art glass pumpkin, in glowing colors, so that started a small collection.

I have a fall-colored ceramic bird, a hedgehog, a few branches, a brunished copper mug, some owls, a terra cotta bowl filled with pinecones, pods and leaves, out right now.

Oh, and I brought out an amber hurricane and two vintage brown glass bottles the other day.

I now like these 'suggestions' of fall, but don't feel compelled to use them every year-- it's fun to vary things, and some years I'm more minimal.

Re: Fall decorating question

@Kachina624     I go "whole hog" for Halloween.    Those centipedes are 3' long.    I also have huge bats, tarantulas and the "whole family" left over from previous years...

I have low wattage flood lights for the burglars.    Well, maybe the floods are for ME, too.....this is a REALLY DARK neighborhood at night...and if I hear "something" rustling around...I want to know WHAT it is (!!)

Only burglaries in 20 years have been people who forgot to close their garage doors.

But a wreath is JUST FINE TOO !!!!!      di

Re: Fall decorating question

For Christmas, always, but just a beautiful tree. No displays inside. Sometimes I will string some fairy lights around my deck and backyard. I might do it early, this year, so I can enjoy them for Halloween, too.

But, when my DH was alive we had huge Halloween parties. A full house. It took us a month to set up decorations and prepare for it.

My attic is still full of these items. Whenever someone comes for repairs needing to be in the attic, I always have to remind them there is a casket with a life size dummy in it up there. I even loaned some of the items one year for my hospital's Halloween display.

We also had advanced pumpkin carving contests and we'd display them during the party. We had some beauties. My last one was a carving of my Akita. My best work. Looked just like him.

Oh my gosh, did we have wonderful times. It's what makes the Fall my favorite time of the year. It's when I reminisce about how magical it was.

[ Edited ]

I've never decorated for fall, and very little for other seasons. The trees, shrubs and flowers do a lot of decorating for me! I do sometimes buy a seasonal candle, and occasionally buy a few small gourds or something to put in a dish, but only if I'm doing entertaining. That said, I think those who enjoy decorating their homes are doing something quite wonderful, and I appreciate it.

BTW, There are seasons everywhere! They're just more subtle in some places than others. Smiley Happy
