Re: FESTIVE OLD VERMONT HOUSE

Simple and beautiful.  I love the Christmas notes.  Thank goodness... no plastic, glitter, or other modern made in China cheap Christmas junk.

This is very well put together. It's actually hard for me to find a problem with it.

It's nice if that's your style.  I'll pass on it.

@PA Mom-mom   It's your draft, it's not pulling properly.  Your flue needs to be cleaned as well because of the creosote buildup.

@SomertimeThanks for your input. We get it cleaned every year, so I'm not sure. We don't get smoke, just soot. I guess it could be because we do a lot of cooking in our fireplace. That's why we get it cleaned so often.

Re: FESTIVE OLD VERMONT HOUSE

A very charming Cape Cod house.  The furnishings are perfect for this home.  Being a New England girl, I love to see antiques and unusual furnishings.  Using natural fruit and greens is a very old and authentic way of decorating for the holidays.  I was given a book on Williamsburg Christmas decorating, and some arrangements can be quite elaborate.  I will add that I would paint the outside of this house.

Re: FESTIVE OLD VERMONT HOUSE

@PA Mom-mom  Since you have it cleaned, Have the draft checked and the damper, too, it's not pulling enough up the chimney.  What type of cooking do you do in the fireplace?  Do you have a wood burning stove insidie the fireplace?  When my family lived in Vermont, we had a huge fireplace in the kitchen and had a 4 burner wood stove and oven which we used when the electricity would go out during the heavt snow storms.  It would heat the kitchen and we were able to cook and roast in the oven as well.  We had four other working fireplaces in the house as well and never had any soot.

I had a fireplace as well with a white marble surround and burned wood logs and once in awhile those composite logs from the grocery.  I had a problem once and it was the damper and once it was fixed, no problem.  PS, the damper was only a few years old, hinges became lose and would not fully open.  Soot is no fun!
