I'm looking for a floor lamp and just reviewed a website that appeared in a local newspaper inserrt today.
Lots of lamps to look at, but one stunned me. It was 38% off and still cost $10,998.00 - originally over $17,000. But, it does come with its bulbs.

If you're really wealthy, I don't think you have to worry about dropping $11,000 on a lamp...someday lotto or powerball!!
I'm sure they're investing in real estate, precious metals, art, cars, planes, helicopters, yachts, private islands, etc...not to mention growing their own personal wealth with investments...

@AKgirl2We agree. That $11,000 might not even be noticed if you're sitting on a few billion dollars like those at the very top of the wealth scale.
What amazed me was that the lamp was there alongside some I might actually buy.

That was kind of a slowww burn...anyway, like most American housewives would bite!

I guess it all depends on what you consider wealthy. I've had good friends who were multi-millionaires, don't think billionaires, who had normal homes, a small yacht, small plane, motorhomes - the normal stuff most of us would like to have. Both were self-made businessmen and brought up like most average Americans and lived just like the rest of us, wore wrangler jeans, not big-name designer clothes, etc. Only difference, they didn't have to budget for a vacation, worry about upkeep on stuff, had people wash their cars (two to three cars) and clean their houses.
And, the one problem that came with having a few bucks - always wondered if people liked them for themselves, not for what they had.
Guess it all depends on whether you've been brought up rich or attained it yourself, along with family upbringing and values.

I really wonder if it's not a missing decimal place? Unless it includes a valuable antique figurine, or is a minor genuine Tiffany, or is gold-plated, I can't see why a lamp would be that expensive regardless of who could afford it.

@athenianI think the price was accurate. It apparently is a part of a series. I was thinking it was a one of a kind artist designed object in the form of a lamp. It just felt so out of place when so many of the lamps on the page, although expensive, were well under $1000 and even under $500 and then on sale.
There was nothing else of its type anywhere that I saw. Very out of place.

@eddyandmeI think of the people you are describing as the comfortably wealthy. They can do all you describe without too much worry. This group has grown exponentially during my lifetime. As you do, I know quite a few people at that level - most of the ones I know have created their own wealth, working hard and saving. Those I know best also freely admit there was always some luck at some point along the way.
The really wealthy sit above them with their billions - I don't know any of them personally and doubt I ever will. I know names from the news, but I can't call any of them on the telephone or go knock on their door and expect to be amitted to one of their many homes!
