I have a Dyson floor fan and love it. The other night, we had a quick electrical outage and the fan wouldn't come back on - instead it showed an ''E'' on the lighted readout on the fan. I unplugged it for a few minutes and replugged it - and it started working properly. My question is: The fan is very expensive - Should I perhaps be plugging the fan into a surge protector to prevent possible damage in the future? Thank you in advance for your help.

Yes, anything electronic or electrical should have a surge protector on it. There is 2 different things that can cause you trouble. A surge where all the lights in the house go suddenly much brighter, and a brown out where the lights get dim. Both can cause your appliances to fail. And the electric companies have an out, they can claim the cause of the problem was an "Act of God" and they don't have to pay for your appliances to be repaired or replaced. The surge protector is your "insurance policy" in case of a problem. Another place most people don't think of protecting from a surge is the garage door opener.

Read the info that came with your fan. From your own description it sounds like you may already have surge protection built into that unit
It refused to start after power was disrupted and later restored. Then the appliance was 'reset' and worked properly after you unplugged and replugged.
That is how a built in surge protector would work.
I just bought a $17.00 box fan and it has a surge protective plug. It looks about the same as any other plug.
(Not that style with the buttons)
If it's on a simple box fan, Dyson may have installed that type of plug on their pricy air mover.
edit to add, I have a few entire circuts in my home that have surge protection. I had that installed since mine is an older home, and the goal is to get rid of those old plug-in protector strips.
Only one outlet on each circuit has the built in breaker (buttons). All the other outlets on that circuit look like normal outlets, but they are all surge protected. You may have something like this in your home already.

Thanks friends for your comments. I decided to call DYSON and ask their technical support about the need for a surge protector, just to be on the safe side. I was told that the floor fan has a ''built in surge protector'' and I don't need anything further. YAY ME !
I hope this information might help someone else who owns one. By the way, the fan is expensive but it works well and looks 'a sight better' than the other fans I've seen.
