Dynatrap Good while it works

I bought a Dynatrap XL three years ago and paid about 170 for it.  It worked for two summers but when I went to plug it in last spring it didnt light up so I replaced it with the set of extra bulbs that came with it.  Well they didnt work.  I contacted the company and they said it must be the ballast and they wanted 65 for me to send it back to them to fix it.  It would have cost probably 20 dollars each way to ship the big thing.  The total would have been over 100.  No way was I going to invest that much money which would have been at that point almost 300 counting the purchase price.  These things are too expensive to only last through two seasons.  I even ask if they would send me the ballast so I could install and they said yes for 35 but they would not send me instructions on how to install it.  I wasnt going to spend 35 on a ballast that I wouldnt know how to install and then that might not fix it.  There should be a five year warranty on these expensive trappers.  It worked but as I said the company or QVC should replace these things that don't last any longer than that or at least offer to sell me a replacemnt for a discounted price.  Love most of my QVC items and I am a loyal customer spending thousands a year.  Please consider contacting this company about their customer service and warranties. I would love to have another one but I need to know it will last more than two seasons.  Thanks.

Awful customer service!  It seems very few pricey items are built with more than a few years of useful life in them.

At least you had success in your yard, mine doesnt seem to have any effect on the mosquitoes.

Perhaps, try Utube for directions to fix it.

Sounds like my experience with OttLites.  They're nice-looking lamps and not inexpensive.  But when the ballast goes, it can't be replaced, so the lamp goes in the trash.  It's sad and wasteful.  Needless to say, I don't buy OttLites any more.

Sometimes I think that products purchased at QVC are lower in quality. That's why customer service at these companies isn't good -- because they actually don't sell those items. They're made for QVC.

  • When the warranty says it's good for a year, that's usually as long as it lasts. Stuff they make today no matter where it's made is not made to last for obvious reasons. I would rather pay more for a product that is quality that will last 5 years or more. We have a small Dynatrap and a large one, they work great and do eliminate mosquitoes. They are not maintenance free and if you don't follow the instructions it does not work as promised. We had a gnat and mosquito free summer last year.

Bought and tried one when first came out.  It "caught more promises" than..........bugs.  Moths loved it tho.

To really kill mosquitoes for $40 - $50 from Amazon get a zapper that looks like a black lantern.  Have had for 3 years and still working.  WOW does that thing work - ultraviolet light atracks thousands.

@fthunt  -  would you be able to check your Amazon account and tell me the exact brand name?  I checked Amazon and there were a lot of lantern type mosquito zappers.  I would like to have one that I know has worked for others.  I have two of the Dynatraps and am very disappointed with them. TIA!
