How do you think it stayed in such pristine condition over the years?  LOL

Re: Does it really look that bad?

Yes, it looks bad. The plastic is  ill fitting and just doesn't work. As someone else has posted. Just use your table cloth as it was intended to be used.  Wash it when it needs it. Tablecloths are there to protect the table and to look good.  The plastic is a noticable distraction from the tablecloth itself.

gosh, i love your tablecloth!  i have a few vintage tablecloths myself.

i think your table looks fine, and as has been said already ... it is your house so you should do what makes you happy and comfortable.

maybe non-use or very little use?

it also may have been used just for "display" and then taken off when food hits the table.

Re: Does it really look that bad?

The colors and the fabric are the beauty of the tablecloth and the plastic really takes it away.

I would fold it up and serve the food you don't want spilled, then put it back on to enjoy in all it's glory.

If you're having guests over for lunch or dessert, serve something that won't stain it.

Or put down solid color placemats in case someones spills a speck of coffee or whatever.

It's a pretty tablecloth.  It's not a pretty piece of plastic though!

Looks great to me; I use a plastic cover over all of my tablecloths!   Even tho they were all bought on sale, none were cheap, and I want them to stay pretty.

@house_cat  ITA with all the people who said do what you want to do.  It's your house.  If someone finds fault with it, let 'em eat at a restaurant.
