I come from a military family background and my family was always moving from town to town every few years. Because of this we never had china on our dinner table because moving it made it difficult to preserve so it was never bought. Today I still don't own any china.

As a kid my grandmother made Sunday dinner and we sat down to a table with china, silverware and linens. She instilled to be thankful for what we had. Sunday dinners & holidays were a lot of work but they were to be celebrated.
Maybe it is socio-economic? The same people who don't "bother" with Thanksgiving spend it shopping WM.
@Snowpuppy- wow. Just wow. What a rude statement.
If you read my post you'll see that I sold all of my China, crystal and sterling AND my mom's. It's certainly not a socio-economic situation. Some people just don't use this stuff. Having these things is not a priority or an area of interest for me.
As for Thanksgiving? My husband and I aren't "doing Thanksgiving" this year, gasp.....we're going to go out of town and spend a few days at a casino.

I use my Franciscan stoneware, it is what I like. I also use their glassware. Never was interested in china, it is just personal choice and preference IMO.

We also have Lenox for special occasions and holidays.
That describes us too. We started out with Correlle and I didn't like it at all because of the way the forks and knives felt and sounded on it--it's glass.
Anyway, through the many years we've had a Villeroy and Boch set too that we use and some other white porcelain we use everyday. And it wears like iron.
We keep a stack of good salad plates in a rack on the counter (china plates) in case we have someone come by and eat a snack or have pie, and we use those ourselves for snacks. Why not?
If we have someone eat with us, we always use the china, formal real "meal" or burgers or whatever. Why not? It's beautiful and special.
Modern china is FINE in the dishwasher if it isn't banging into something. The gold or silver rim will dent if you hit it if you take the china out while it is still VERY hot, but if you let it cool overnight in the dishwasher it is fine. It is probably stronger porcelain that what you'd use every day.
To us, meals are special and always have been, so we use our "good" stuff. I also think people in the South are more inclined to use their special things in general. It's just traditional and we seem to go more for tradition and what mama and grandmother did.

Thinking back over this thread, why not use things that are beautiful and that you have? Isn't it better to use them up rather than never use them?
It's odd how we get in the state of mind that something is too good for us when in reality we'd love to use it. What a shame.
I'm talking to me and everyone else about those clothes with tags, shoes with unmarred soles, etc. We should use them even if we have to make up a reason or event or declare it special night for hamburgers! LOL!!!

I change my mind a lot. I knew if I registered for fancy china, I might not like it in a few years and want something different. I tire of things quickly too. So I never registered for fancy china that I would only use on special occasions.
What I did register for was Chrismas dishes and nice silverware and nice glasses. I'm glad I did that.
I've changed out my everyday dishes a few times already. Everyday silverware I've replaced. I've gotten new everyday glasses - a few break and I don't want mismatched glasses.
I always set a pretty table. When my mom passed, I kept what I liked and got rid of what I didn't. She had so many sets of glasses and dishes - it was overwhelming to me. Even though I got rid of some of the china, I kept the sugar bowl and creamer and a few pieces of each set. That was much more manageable to me. Even though I got rid of a lot, I still have certain pieces of hers that I treasure.

it's very "green" to use what you have - and ditch that disposable stuff.

I hosted Thanksgiving last fall and bought 16 place settings of beautiful china at a thrift store for $30. It even included lots of serving pieces. I think lots of people who host large gatherings these days use disposable items and keep things very casual. Nearly every garage sale / estate sale / thrift store I go to has china, silverplate, and glassware for sale for nearly nothing. Times have changed.

I have my mother's crystal and some crystal cut vases. I also have Mothers heavy silverplated flatware. I always liked the feel of the heavy flatware versus stainless steel.

My mom had a set of china from her great aunt. It's absolutely beautiful.
The plates and bowls are so small. I compared one of the dinner plates to what I use for a salad plate. The bowl held a little more than a cup of liquid. Portion sizes are huge nowadays, so dinnerware accomodates bigger portions.
Anyway, I did keep those because I mix and match with what I use for Thanksgiving and Christmas.
