Re: Do you know ANYTHING about "Sound-proof Windows"?

@RinaRina   To be fair, you must let a salesperson do their job! They need to see your home and measure to make sure what you think you want will fit in the space. They are the professionals. Let them do the work and advise you on what you really need. At this point, you really do not know.

Call Pella or Marvin and ask for someone to visit your home. They will measure, provide a list of color choices and offer suggestions. You are the customer. Give them a chance to SELL to you. Don't tell them what you want over the phone; make them work for their sale!  There are so many options available from handles to blinds inserted between the panes.

Then, get two or three other bids with the SAME features from different companies, giving each company equal time with you in your home. You must compare apples to apples when making your final decision to be fair.

@RinaRina   Do you have any idea how much this will cost?  My sister just went through this, and her estimates were between $20 - $30,000.  She is not getting triple paned windows either.  What if you spent that money and it didn't solve your problem?

Funny you should say that ...

I went out to run an errand and when I got in the house, my phone was ringing.

It was another window co.

I told him I wanted triple pane vinyl windows with an STC rating of 35.

And that is exactly what he said --- "I can't guarantee that's gonna solve your problem."

He told me to get double-panes of LAMINATED glass.  One pane would be thin, the other would be thicker for sound-proofing.

I told him I was trying to block out subwoofers.

He also suggested that I move.

Re: Do you know ANYTHING about "Sound-proof Windows"?

@RinaRina  Ours are custom-made windows.  We preferred the options  and choices available from Marvin and Pella, as well as their installers who were on the payroll of each company. The other companies didn't come close in quality to those two windows!

@RinaRina   Get some good salespeople out there to EXPLAIN windows to you! It's apparent you don't understand them at all. There is no way two or three pane windows could be installed in place of one pane windows! How would such a thick new window ever fit in such a thin space??

You need to begin with the professionals (salespeople from quality window companies). Get several bids with the same specifications. In order to do so, you must do your research! You can't simply decide what you want and expect a company to put in the windows in your current openings! It does not work that way. It takes a finish carpenter a lot of work to prepare the opening for new windows, depending upon the age, size and style of the house, how many windows and what sizes, and what you order. There are so many features to consider when ordering windows. Our home had many windows, but they were not as large as we wanted so we ordered much larger windows at the same time for asthetic reasons, as well as to let in more sunlight.

Get a professional involved to help with your decisions and to provide much needed information on the needs for your home. Then, make sure all bids request the identical specifications. I cannot stress that enough.

Trying to get information on QVC's site is not  a place for professional advice. You need get a complete education in  windows before you begin. Do you even have a clue what they cost? Expect to spend more than an expensive next vehicle. I have no idea if loans are available for windows. Check with your banker if that's also a  problem.

Ask about low-E windows. Also windows with double-glaze glass which is more expensive. My new windows are low-E, double-pane with argon gas inside. I could not believe the difference in the sound coming in from the outside. I live in a very noisy area and my new windows made a huge difference. I couldn't be more happy with them.

Do you have Low-E with double-glaze?

Is that for energy efficiency?  (as opposed to sound abatement)

BTW, when you say, "double-glaze", do you mean gas?

@RinaRina

My windows have low-E glass and they are double-pane with an inch space between the panes. That amount of space is why there is noise reduction and increased energy savings. My windows are not double glaze. The reason why I didn't get the glazed glass is b/c the cost was too high to justify the energy savings over time plus there are other things about doubled glazed which I didn't want....has to do with sun exposure.

I also looked a triple pane. Those are also good for noise reduction but the high cost would not justify the difference in noise reduction compared to the thick double pane windows I have now. If money was not a concern then maybe I would have gotten the triple pane with low-E glass. Also consider the price of having to replace a broken window...that also was a factor I had to take into consideration when I chose the double-pane with low-E.

ETA- I just realized that I should not be saying 'glaze' ...what I mean to say is 'coating'.

Glaze means a pane of glass ...double glazing means double pane. Sorry for the confusion. I think I still have covid brain fog going on...geez.

This is the best place for me to ask CUSTOMERS how they like their windows because I think the ladies on these boards are especially smart, so I appreciate the feedback.

Same as reading reviews ... which I usually do BEFORE I buy.

I'm always interested in other people's OPINIONS.

Thanks for yours.

@RinaRina   Then, please don't complain when a salesman doesn't seem helpful because you seem to know it all. His expertise about windows has not had a chance with your initial phone calls and attitude!

Try calling and asking THEM questions . . . they are the professionals and experts.

Are you talking about triple-paned windows? We have them and they are fabulous! They also were made to block the sun and have kept my drapes and upholstery from fading (best money spent!). ETA: Low E with Argon added between the panes. Sorry, I forgot what the terminology was.The noise blocking was a feature we were pleasantly surprised about.

Triple-pane windows block so much more noise than a double pane window AND the utilities have been much less. They have paid for themselves time and again if many ways.

When having new windows installed, make sure the installer is excellent. He is the most important part of the project and should not be a cost-saver. Go with the best you can find; research and look at some of his work before hiring an installer. It will be worth your time and extra money.
