When we were planning to have our home built I was insisting on crown molding. i think it makes a house look so rich. I grew up in a house with it and always missed having it in my own homes. So DH reluctantly agreed he would give in on crown molding if I would cave and let him have carpet. Marriage is all about compromise. Our house does not have any square walls - every room has walls at odd angles and little and large alcoves as well as arched doorways and an arch over the opening from the kitchen to the dining room. These are accented by the crown molding and it makes them look like beautiful architectural details. (at least in my opinion). After we moved in something my DH did that I think is just beautiful is he bent wood molding and finished off the arch between the kitchen and dining room with molding as well. it wasn't that difficult - he wet the wood just enough so it would bend then nailed it to the wall and let it dry. It shrunk slightly but we filled those cracks with wood filler and painted it. Some of the neighbors have asked him to frame theirs as well but he says No - this is for us only.

No crown molding. Also have some rooms with odd angles. Hadn't thought about adding crown molding. Looking around, I don't think it would go with the flow of the house. I do like crown molding though.

No. You can't make a silk purse out of a sow's ear.

Yes, we have nice thick crown moulding. I guess I took it for granted until we started looking for a new house and now I see how plain the rooms look without it.

OMG, I just spit out my coffee!
While I do like the look, much too formal for my Up North lodge look.

Our camper also has crown as well as other really beautiful moldings surrounding the pull outs. It is just beautiful. The wood in our camper is all medium tone cherry, as is all the moldings. In the camper, though, because of low ceilings the crown is only 3".However, it is still prettier than would be without it.If I recall correctly this has become a standard in campers these days as they try to make them as much like a home as possible.

I think as a kid I just assumed all houses had it and never noticed until i had homes/ apartments of my own.

We do not, but has been a top priority in the next 'remodel'.
Our house was built in 1973 when such things were not in style. I've always admired it in older homes, and had we been able to afford it when we moved in and painted, papered and carpeted the whole house, I would have done it on the main floor then, but it just wasn't in the budget.
At some time in the next couple of years, the living room is going to have to be repainted and new flooring, along with a new picture window and new upholstered furniture. I will make sure we get new baseboards, and crown molding at that time. Can't wait to see the upgrade this gives the plain squared walls.
