Re: Do you have a clothesline that you use?

Yes, I have a clothesline and poles in my backyard.  I'm not taking them down.  I use it for my comforters, blankets, and pillows to air out.  When I bring them back inside, they smell so good!

Re: Do you have a clothesline that you use?

I live in a casual beach town, they are *allowed*.   Many of my neighbors have one.

No trees in my back yard (I wish!), but if we did plant one, I'd still hang my clothes outside.

I used to have the square kind that you could turn---I loved that thing. think hanging clothes on a line is very zen and theraputic and the smell is fabulous. Even got a new one, years ago and lashed it to the corner of my deck on the railings to use as hubs wouldn't put it the ground. I now have a small tripod thing that I use but it tips over------still use it tho, for shirts, pants-------

Son just bought a mid-century bungalow home. Clothesline poles in backyard won't budge. He's thinking about putting in a kid zip line. The poles are much farther apart than my childhood clothesline. It brought back memories of early childhood.

@jeanlake  If your son ends up putting in the zip line, tell him to be sure to put plenty of padding around the poles. Years ago, a neighbor put a zip line between 2 mature trees in their backyard. It looked like such a gentle slope between the trees. When his 7 year old tried it out, he went flying into the tree and bounced off it onto the ground. No injuries except for his pride, but better safe than sorry.

Yes to answer your question but I agree about the bird issue. Now, instead of putting whole set of sheets out to dry, I just hang out the pillowcases. If they get icky from the birds, I just grab another pair and put them in the wash. I also use it to do a quick dry on cleaning rags or other very damp items.

No, but on breezy days I'll open every window in the sunroom to dry the bedding. There's something about fresh air and sheets. I also dry my husband's well worn walking shorts and tees, along with my gardening clothes. Saves on electricity.

No way.  I can't stand the feeling of clothes that have been dried on a clothesline.  I'm cringing just thinking about it.  Give me my dryer any day.

Re: Do you have a clothesline that you use?

As a kid, I had to wash clothes and hang out to dry.  We had a long clothesline because we were a family of 5 with 2 rows for hanging.  Now I would be kicked out of my apt. if I put up a clothesline on my deck.  lol  I believe in some European countries hanging clothes outside is still going on.

[ Edited ]

We still do. I actually posted my quilts drying on it last year (or was it the year before?lol) and was surprised at a few negative comments.

I don't use mine as much as I did in my younger years, but still do use it and I'm always glad to have it in case the dryer breaks. It's more work than just using the dryer, and often my knees don't encourage me to take the extra steps to hang things out these days.

I hang out quilts that I wash each year, I hang out my husband's work clothes, I hang the whites out a time or two in the summer to bleach them out a bit. I like to hang out sheets.

A lot of people don't like line drying because of wrinkles or stiffness. I find that just 5 minutes in a hot dryer before hanging out will remove most of that issue.

I have a drying rack in the laundry room for winter for the things I like to line dry, as I do line dry a number of things.

I live in the country, and almost everyone has clotheslines and uses them, Amish and English alike.

I used to hang stuff out then when it was dry run it in the dryer for 5-10 minutes to soften it up.
