Re: Do you ever ""make do"" before buying?

Yes, I do it often and always feel good about having done it.

Re: Do you ever ""make do"" before buying?

I buy and use the Better Homes and Gardens wax melts from Walmart (lemongrass and mint is my favorite). They come in a small plastic 6 pack of cubes. I almost threw away the package when it was empty and then realized I could cut off the lid and use it for storage. I have a shallow drawer table top chest on my bureau and I could fit 6 of the boxes in those drawers which now hold my smaller earrings. Keeps them all separated and organized.

Dex, I use plastic garbage containers as my plant pots or higher end bath set garbage containers for the more decorative places-living room. I don't poke holes, I just use them as decorative sleeves. I use leftover cooking microwaved dinner plastics to hold odd size kitchen utensils in my kitchen drawers. I make lots of stuff, not to make do, but because a creative impulse will strike me. I'm always making something.

I am even less creative than Chrystal says she is......if a bleach bottle was used to store bleach, my mind doesn't get past the fact that it is intended for beach ! However, and I know this is not the same thing, my dryer broke months ago and in January I discovered mold in my dishwasher . I have been washing dishes by hand and hanging clothes outside or on a wooden indoor drying rack. That is the extent of my "imaginative" thinking !

Re: Do you ever ""make do"" before buying?

I posted this already on LTT's retirement resolutions thread, but I'll repost it here for those who don't read Among Friends.

This is my package of fish dice for school. I repurposed my CAT scan prep drink container (after a trip through the dishwasher) and covered with two kinds of wrapping paper.

These are my toiletries bags that are about 10+ years old. The strap has come off of two of the zipper pulls, so I took ribbon and crocheted a chain to use to pull the zippers. I still adore the bags and they are in good shape, but they just had that minor annoyance.

Re: Do you ever ""make do"" before buying?

This is my custom scarf rack, made with my favorite fish napkin rings that I found (new) at a thrift store. In my previous house, I had more room to host so I used them more often. Now, instead of being put away for "someday" I repurposed them into scarf hooks. I drilled holes in them, nailed them into a board (it was about $3 at Lowe's) and used scrap fabric from my quilting and leftover ribbon to make the ties.

You ladies make me smile with your ingenuity. My elderly mother who grew up during the Depression used to have a saying. Use it up, wear it out, make it do or do without! I think she wore the same winter coat for fifteen years but she got a new hat and scarf every year and nobody realized about the old coat. She was such a pretty little lady! I miss her.

This is a simple-the plastic cover for my bread knife broke-Read somewhere to use a paper towel tube-it works. So now I have more of my knifes with covers.

The little plastic scoops that are in laundry soap-I use one on the sink for my sos pad.

I, also, have made curtains from sheets, lots of material for the money.
