Re: Do You Like A Passthrough Window Between Kitchen And Living Room?

Yes! - We have one between the Kitchen and the Dining Room, and I love it. ♥

It brings more light into the kitchen, and I can chat with DH, while he's watching TV in the living room or sitting at the dining room table, as I wash dishes or cook.

@ECBG  That is hard for me to believe that you graduated from the school of architecture with a 5-year-degree in interior design and you have never seen a pass-through from kitchen to great room/dining room or living room?

I never attended school of architecture but did get a ConEd course in interior decorating and saw those designs on Power Point and have lived in 17 houses, having a traveling dad and a military husband.

I actually even had one in a rental unit, and I loved it for the time but did not want one for my permanent lifestyle living but now that I am retired and there are the two of us and we don't entertain like we once did, I would LOVE to have one.  When I get rid of this house, I am getting me a small, about 1500-sq ft house (or maybe even one smaller), even if I have to have it built.  It makes life easy as you age.

@Still Raining   To my mind, it would make more sense to have a pass through window, between kitchen and dining room, where

food was being served.

I don't care for them.  I prefer an open floor plan.

No and I don't want one.

It may work for someone if they are entertaining  and they have a big mess of dirty pots and pans in the kitchen they don't want anyone to see

Re: Do You Like A Passthrough Window Between Kitchen And Living Room?

@cuddlesmama , I have an opening from my kitchen looking across the hall into my dining room.  I have plantation shutters in the opening.  I love it.  I can have it open, half open or closed.  We planned it this way when we built our home.

I have a large eat in kitchen.  The plantation shutters let in a huge amount of light and give us a view of the front yard through a large double hung window in the dining room.  There is a sliding patio door at the other end of the kitchen so it has natural light all day.

I don't use it as a pass through but as a way to keep the kitchen full of light.

no, that would be a loss of valuable wall space.

we have an open doorway between the kitchen and the formal dining area. it used to have a swinging door, but we removed that.

A pass through opeining is an opening in a wall usually in the kitchen to the living room. An island  is an area you may have a sink in it  and an area to sit and eat at.  The 2 are totally different.

Re: Do You Like A Passthrough Window Between Kitchen And Living Room?

The reason I asked is because  my husband and I are moving and we saw a house that was built in 2001 and had this look and I didn't like it at all and was wondering what your  Ladie's opinion would be about this look. I would love to close up that wall and have more wall space. The kitchen is very long  and soo is that opening. Thanks everyone.

Re: Do You Like A Passthrough Window Between Kitchen And Living Room?

I don't know if I've ever seen one in real life.  I have seen them on TV; mostly in sitcoms like Everybody Loves Raymond and All in the Family for example.  However, they always seemed to be right next to the doorway to the table area, so why not just use the doorway?

Also, some of you mention a pass-through window between the kitchen and the living room.  That seems like an unnecessary location for one.
