I imagine it would depend on the size and layout of the kitchen in relation to the dining room. It wouldn't work in our house. We have cabinets and our stove where the kitchen shares a wall with the dining room. There's nowhere else to put them unless we would do a huge renovation. We have a doorway opening to the dining room just a few steps from the stove so that's always worked out fine.

Like @LindaSal , I'm in a townhouse with one between kitchen (over the sink) and dining room. Since the kitchen has no window, I get light from the dining room windows.

I don't care for that look. Either take the wall out or leave it a wall. I don't see the purpose except if the wall is load bearing so can't be removed completely for the open concept look.

We have a second home that I would love to have a pass-through window in....but hubby said it ain't happening. Ha! And yes, it would be way too much trouble and expense.
Tried to find pics for those unclear on the idea. This was the first I ran across and is what I think of as a pass-through. It is from a blog called "SARAH joy."

Hey, @PansyBoo !
I wouldn't want my stove to be at the opening like that. All I can picture is spattering grease, spaghetti sauce, etc going over that wall.....ICK! Maybe if it was just countertop.
OR maybe I am a sloppy cook. ![]()

Oh yeah, I agree. My spaghetti sauce can go flying to parts unknown!
My friend in Dallas had one of these back in the day and it was over the kitchen sink looking into the den. That's probably a less "icky" way to go but could still get a little juicy. LOL!

@I am still oxox wrote:I am not sure of the difference between a pass through and an island
A pass through is an opening from one room to another. An Island is soley in a kitchen. HUGE difference.

I never had one and I am not interested. I prefer food kept out of my living room. I have no need for a pass through.

No. We don't need one. Our kitchen is open from kitchen to dining room to living room.
I can see most of the kitchen while in the living room. I can see part of the dining room.
There's about a half wall in the kitchen where our gas stove is with over 6' ft counter to the right off stove & over 2' to the left of stove. The 6' counter to right of stove is 30" instead of 25" at the end so DH has space to roll out dough etc.
I have over 6' of counter on the other side of kitchen to left of sink with over 2' to the right.
At least we have counter space to prep food.
We had a lot of drawers installed in the lower part of kitchen with cabinets on top with a few on bottom.
We also had wall to wall & floor to ceiling pantry cabinets installed in the dining.

No. My mom's house has one from the kitchen to the living room. This is an eat-in kitchen with no dining room. The kitchen sink is under the pass-through and the sofa is on the living room side. It's a smaller window than the one pictured above so you couldn't really even put bar stools up to it on the living room side. The only nice thing about it is that you can stand at the sink and have a conversation with the people in the living room.
