I thought this was an old look, but I see many people asking to have this done in there home today. It reminds me of bing in a restrauant when they leave food to be picked up.

I have seen them a couple of times on HGTV and they are kind of cute. I like them. I saw a House Hunters episode and the realtor was like oh you can close that up and the buyers said oh we actually like it.

I've seen pass throughs going from the kitchen outdoors for eating outside. Never had one in a house tho. Not sure I would like it.

Personally, I'm not a fan of that look.  I think it looks dated and having a 'hole cut through the wall', in my opinion,  detracts from the overall look of the house.  That said, I guess what's old is new again.  It's not my style.

I have one in my townhouse in between the kitchen and dining room.  It's an open concept design and the kitchen is small so I love it as it makes the place look larger and helps light up the kitchen area.  Not sure what the size is you are referring to but mine is quite large so it flows nicely.

I am not sure of the difference between a pass through and an island

I have lived n homes with a pass through window from the kitchen to the dinning room.  They were pretty much a waste of wall space for me.  

Don't think I have ever seen one between the kitchen and the living room.
