Re: Declutter 2026: What Have You Purged Today?

@wagirl - Moving is a huge job for sure. When we built our current house 14 years ago I thought that I was going to be here until I died. Now I've come to realize that it's too big, too expensive and too much work. So we will be downsizing and moving in a few years and I am not looking forward to it at all. I'm trying to think ahead and work on getting rid of stuff over the next few years but it will still be a HUGE job.

Ok Ladies, you are NOT gonna believe this...

Remember that closet that DH has that is chock full of clothes that he hasn't worn in years?

Well, a couple of days ago, I noticed he was hauling garbage bags of "stuff" downstairs and into the trunk of his car.

Didn't want to stop and inquire, but I snuck upstairs and peeped into that closet, and VOILA - He had done a huge purge!

I didn't say anything, because I had been bugging him about it for months, so I'll just wait for him to let me know what he did. Smiley Wink

@LavernLuvsShoes - That is so awesome! I love it when my husband takes the initiative to purge and declutter some of his items without me having to bug him about it.

Re: Declutter 2026: What Have You Purged Today?

Hello everyone.  Thanks again to @rnmom for the invitation.  I'm stopping by for a visit as my DH and I are embarking on a major redecorating project.  Since we're painting and redoing several floors, everything needs to be emptied and  moved - not a small task.

Yesterday DH listed a LR accent chair on Marketplace and someone came over and bought it.

He also listed our china hutch.  Someone else wants it and they're coordinating a pickup time.  We got it emptied last night.  I'm keeping the dishes but have all the silverware boxed and set aside to donate to a local resale shop that supports the Christian schools in our area.

It's a start...

Re: Declutter 2026: What Have You Purged Today?

@rnmom --I did the same thing you are planning on. Moved out of my house after 35 years, only it was due to my now ex, not wanting to be married anymore--after 47 years--anyway--had to pack up a 2000sq ft, 2 story house and be out in 2 months.  I was forced to get rid of/donate so many things I was not ready to part with and move into an apt. But I did it and mostly on my own. Lived in that apt for 5 years and then moved to a new place this Jan. And got rid of alot more but still there is too much. I have a storage unit besides that I need to sort thru--that is this summers project. I think you planning for the next couple years is a good thing. And BTW---the divorce was one of the best things that I have gone thru----

Re: Declutter 2026: What Have You Purged Today?

Four more boxes for my vets pick up tomorrow.  I'm trying to get boxes ready every 2 months.  I have too much bakeware and kitchen stuff.  Every pickup had had kitchen items and clothes.  It's small steps but it's all good.  The basement still needs major decluttering.......

@amyb  I'm NEVER bored with your posts, it makes me realize how much stuff here still remains.  I have stated before, but I will never be a minimalist, but keep on donating.  My buying is almost non existent.......a few beauty items Jan-April, and nothing kitchen purchased.  Win win.

@JeanLouiseFinch

I think you are making great progress.  We packed up belongings last summer for replacing flooring.  I still have boxes in my kitchen (from china hutch).....

On a positive note, DH just finished painting the dining room so we are ready to move hutch back when we have help.  Small steps.  I know the hutch could go, but I rather like the piece and need somewhere to put china, I am not ready to get rid of it.

Re: Declutter 2026: What Have You Purged Today?

@wagirl - I am grateful that I have more time to plan and hubby seems to be onboard with downsizing. Which is good because the vast majority of the stuff I want to part with is his. Not because his stuff is less valuable than mine, but because it's just stuff that is sitting untouched, not being used. And that drives me nuts. He feels like as long as we have the room it's not hurting anything and I feel like if we're not using it, it should go.

I'm sorry that you were blindsided by the divorce but glad that it worked out for you in the end.

Re: Declutter 2026: What Have You Purged Today?

@Twins Mom - Then definitely keep the hutch! We should keep the things that make us happy.

I think we sometimes get too bogged down with getting rid of things because of the "minimalist" trend but we should definitely keep the things that we enjoy and make us smile.
