Re: Declutter 2025: What Have You Purged Today?

As soon as all the medical equipment was picked up after my husband passed, I started sorting and purging supplies, medications, etc.   1-2 extra kitchen bags have gone in the trash each week, a few supplies were given to family, and another box was donated to the care facility where my mother spent her last days.   I will tackle my husbands closet next; an easy clear out since there's no sentiment attached to anything hanging there.

I did not stock the upright freezer as usual for the winter, but have been trying to use what's in there and make a decision as to whether I need that much food storage in the future for 2 people.  I am adjusting to cooking less food, less often, for less people, so the upright freezer is no longer as important as it once was.

I am still sorting thru dilapidated picture albums from my mothers house, removing and sorting the pictures, and tossing the albums.  Not sure yet how the pictures will be organized in the future, but it will not be in albums.  My brothers have no interest in the pictures, so I don't intend to put much effort into organization other than to identify the ones I can and toss any I can't.

I organized my 5 shelf pantry again; 3 shelves were for food and 2 shelves were various odds and ends items like extra cast iron skillets, Corning percolators and teapots, etc.  One entire shelf was cleared away with a full box of items out in the trash; Rubbermaid pitchers, the last pieces of Tupperware and bakeware that hadn't been used for years.  Also cleared the cabinet under the sink, so am quite happy with my kitchen organization right now.

Am finding plenty to do in these frigid temperatures, while still getting the rest I need.

Re: Declutter 2025: What Have You Purged Today?

[ Edited ]

Tossed 4 flameless votives today that take that 2032 coin type battery, but the battery box cover is the type you need to unscrew to change. I tried today, with the teeniest, tiny screw driver I have, for just those type things, to open it for about 10 minutes and it didn't budge on any of them. I finally said...with what life I have left....nobody got time for this!! So I have two more where the batteries are still working, I'll keep out (I currently have them in the window I took my tree down from in front of) until they wear out then toss those too.

These were nice, as they had a nice long, flickering type wick...but were wonky all around...sometimes you had to jiggle them and press the battery box to keep them lit before you put them out. And they weren't on timers.

I have another set that have a littler, less flickering wick, but are on timers and no unscrewing of battery box to change the battery...it came in a set of 12....so THAT'S enough for my usage.

I'm betting if I ever wanted more, just like with my Luminaras, and Bethlehem Lights...they've probably got nicer, better technology ones now.

Anyhoo...that was my one morning purge...small but glad to be rid of anything that is that tough to manage or maintain...that's my current mantra with things!

Re: Declutter 2025: What Have You Purged Today?

Opened my husbands closet and grabbed everything except the clothes hanging on the rod.  Several pieces of outdated equipment to toss and more donations for the care home.  6 pair of new to very slightly worn shoes in a bag for my next trip to Union Mission.

No real decluttering however, returning an item to Talbots, does that count? Ha! 😆

@Fifi1 - Yes! Returning an item does count! As long as it's out of your house it counts.

@rnmom @Fifi1

If buying and returning counts as decluttering, not to brag, but I am the queen of this thread.😄

Remember when I said I was going to stop buying clothes, shoes, etc. at the beginning of the year? Well I had some things I had already purchased and wasn't sure about, so I returned them. I thought it was only fair that I could still spend that money since it was from 2024. So I continue to buy, return and buy some more. In all actuality, I think I still have funds left, so it's not all bad.🥴

I have been consumed with cleaning out and  organizing photos on my devices. I am creating albumns so it will be easier to sort through hundreds and hundreds of pix and of course deleting some as I go along.

What a job! Note to self: don't let things get out of hand so they become monumental chores!

@RedTop

I'm so sorry for your loss. Even when we know what is around the corner, it never comes easy.

It sounds as if you are keeping yourself busy with decluttering efforts. Reading your posts makes me feel guilty I am not accomplishing more.😕

At this difficult time, cherish your memories and don't forget to take extra care of yourself.💕

I took some boxes out to recycling.  Still have a couple left to go but will do those on another trip to the dumpsters.

Re: Declutter 2025: What Have You Purged Today?

Well! I finally did some REAL decluttering today!
a very large bag of nice clothing, I just don't wear is packed up and in my vehicle trunk to drop off tomorrow! Feels good! Only problem is I drop off at JJill, as Ive mentioned previously, they collect for a Woman's success program and that means Im tempted!

we have been very chilly outside Seattle, and dry which is most unusual in January!
Nice to see some sunshine though, as winter darkness can get to me!

take care everyone!

@RedTop - I am so sorry to hear of the passing of your husband. I was not aware. I knew that you had lost your mom but I didn't know that your husband passed too.

Re: Declutter 2025: What Have You Purged Today?

I tossed a motion solar light that didn't work anymore. I haven't been doing much decluttering lately and should get back to it.
