Re: Declutter 2025: What Have You Purged Today?

@Sooner   I don't collect China, thank goodness, but have quite the obsession with single serving pieces.  Love them all, and trying to not add to my stash.  I'm glad you got so much joy from them over the years.  My mother gave her niece her China back in the 70's.  It was a beautiful grey set with tiny wheat on them. It was beautiful.  I was surprised she gave it to her without thinking her own daughters may have wanted it.  But it was all ok.  When you are 10-12 you don't think of those things.

Re: Declutter 2025: What Have You Purged Today?

[ Edited ]

Progress...just got down from my outside storage... 🥵

Hot up there & it's not even that hot here in CT yet.

The dolls...

Naturally they were in one of the big boxes on the very bottom of a stack of several other big storage boxes!! I guess when I tucked them away it wasn't with the thought of donating them but "saving" them...or else why on earth did I tuck them away so deep?!! And I first unearthed another bottom box, by moving everything off it, and they weren't in that one! No wonder I was sweating. Anyhoo....dolls are in my trunk & next time I'm out they're going to Goodwill.

All that's left in that bin are a few empty doll boxes, from dolls I still have displayed indoors. And one small cardboard box left from mom's house, that has either teacups from my grandma/great grandma, or the one other box from mom's that has espresso cups I didn't want to let go of. They're both up there. I have 3 sets of espresso cups...all stored...I've yet to make espresso at home, but have my dad's stovetop espresso coffee pots (2) and a can of espresso in my cabinet...and ONE day I will make some! Ha.

Love the vintage espresso cups that are packed away, just nowhere inside to keep them right now...and another box of new ones I like, that mom had bought me, so, I'm not getting rid of those. Those are in my front closet ready to use when I make that cup of espresso!! It's complicated being me.

Also went to get some coins out of a nightstand that, if solid silver, will go to the Gold/coin exchange with my jewelry soon. While in there tossed some misc. stuff.

Speaking of the Coin/Gold exchange....I had told a friend about it, and saw her the other day...she thanked me for telling her about them...said they were very nice, easy to work with (bf has been there with my stuff before, I've never actually gone yet)...and she made $4000.00!! She was thrilled! She had coins & jewelry, likely more than I'll bring, but whatever I get will be great.

She said silver didn't bring much. Gotta poke more through my gold before I go...but knowing me probably not getting rid of much good jewelry...have mostly broken stuff to bring them. We'll see!!

Re: Declutter 2025: What Have You Purged Today?

Do you remember me saying  I'm not emotionally attached to my clothes and once I donate them--out of sight, out of mind? Until the other day...

I went looking for a pair of athletic type pants and for the life of me I could not find them. I opened a dresser drawer and thought I found them until I pulled them out and while they were basically the same fabric they were NOT the same style and were, in fact, a pair I had intended to donate.

Oh-oh. Did I mix them up keeping the ones to donate and donating the one I wanted to keep?

I have to say I was upset all day, not because I couldn't replace those pants, but because I was seemingly so careless.

Then the next day, as I was getting a top out of that drawer, there were my pants folded up between two tops! I'm not nearly as relieved I found those pants as I am comforted in knowing I wasn't as careless as I thought.🥴

(And I'm blaming my husband for folding laundry putting pants between tops.😀)

Re: Declutter 2025: What Have You Purged Today?

I've had the Vietnam Veterans here once every week since my husband passed away.  I put out about 3 - 4 bags each time of clothes and shoes.  I still have so much more - I still have a closet of shirts/sweaters, a closet of winter coats/jackets, dresser drawers, etc.  I'm going through everything slowly and find myself keeping lots of items that remind me of him.

Every week I also put out metal stuff from the garage and sheds for the "metal men" to pick up....lawn mower stuff, car stuff, etc.  It seems as soon as I put it out a truck is pulling up to pick it up.  Hooray!

I've been busy selling his "toys".  The toys include motorcycles, ATV, e-bikes, etc.  Tonight I sold his SUV.   I told the buyer I was FIRM with the price and he wanted me to sell it for $1,000 less.  He told me "I look like I could afford" to let him purchase it for the lesser amount.  I said "no - I can't afford to give the lesser price. I just had over $15,000 in funeral expenses"!    I can't wait until I'm done with selling stuff.  It's so difficult dealing with people when money is involved - I hate it!

Oh well - another crazy day.  Tomorrow I go off to the transmission shop for a routine maintenance check-up for the car.  It had been on hubby's "to-do" list but he never got it done.  I sure miss him.  I got a fast food meal today and it felt so strange eating it in the restaurant without having him sitting there and talking to me.

When I get home tomorrow I'll continue to work on sorting stuff.  Tomorrow is going to be a bit cooler so I'll probably go back to working on the garage and sheds.

Sorry to be rattling on, but I just needed to tell someone what I'm going through.  Today was a difficult day.  Hoping tomorrow will be better.  Smiley Happy

Re: Declutter 2025: What Have You Purged Today?

@BunSnoop Never apologize here for venting, sharing (have you SEEN my rambly rambly posts?!)...it's what we're all here for. My heart goes out to you....though I'm impressed with all you are doing, with a broken heart, I also sensed the understandable tough moments in all of it...the things hubby would have been doing either for or with you. I'm so sorry.

You've done so much.

I shouldn't be shocked, judging how crazy people act these days, but cannot believe HOW that man tried to haggle with you and what he said! HOW RUDE and tacky...not to mention BAD negotiating skills. Ugh. I'm so glad you stuck to your guns. You are SO right about "dealing with people and money"...and the state of mind and heart you are in, even tougher to deal with them. Glad you shot back at him, and hope that put him in his place. I sure wish you had someone else who could do the selling for you...family member?

You've accomplished a lot. An impressive amount. Maybe it's a distraction too, to keep busy with it. Rest too.

You can share here any time.

Re: Declutter 2025: What Have You Purged Today?

Thank you @amyb for always taking the time to reply to me.   As for relatives I have one brother.  He's offered to help with sorting/moving "stuff", but I really don't think he wants to be involved with the selling of it.  Oh well......

I'm selling a John Deere riding mower.  I had no idea what it was worth so I called the dealer where my husband purchased to get an estimate of it's worth.  My husband purchased it about 4 years ago and the salesman still remembered him  -  he said my husband was such a nice friendly man!  He told me approximately what mine was worth and then he told me to mention to potential buyers that if they were to purchase a new one today what the price would be plus told me to also mention to them there would be an additional charge for sales tax.

He also said if I had anything else I need help selling (cars, trailers, snow blowers, etc.) he would help me.  His said he knows my husband kept his stuff really nice and people where he's located (in the country about 40 miles from where I live) love that type of stuff.  I've never met the man but he's willing to do more for me than some people I had thought were good friends of my husband.  A few of his "friends" really surprised me as they did not even mention if there is anything they can do to contact them.

One last thing,  that man buying the SUV also mentioned if I could lower the price as he's now going to have to pay $200 to get a license plate for it.   Really???   That's not my problem!   Next he'll  probably mention he's going to have to pay insurance for it too!

I did not sleep well last night.  I think I may take a little nap and then proceed later with working with more "stuff".  Thank you again @amyb !!!

Re: Declutter 2025: What Have You Purged Today?

I pulled another storage tote off a shelf this week and found more diabetic wound care  supplies going back to my husbands amputation in 2019.  Everything went out in the trash yesterday, along with most of the other things stored in that area.

I realized I am basically reorganizing my entire house; so many things have been moved around, including furniture.  Right now my husbands recliner is the only chair in my living room; I gave my couch and loveseat away earlier today.  Once I have cleaned everything in the room, I will go buy another loveseat and chair.  I no longer need or want as much furniture.

I still need to figure out what to do with my oldest daughters bedroom.  July will be a year since she moved into my parents house, and I'm just now trying to decide how to use the space.  I do not need a spare bedroom, office, craft/sewing room, or an exercise room.  I have chosen a paint color but can't do anything in the room until my daughter moves her gun safe.

I don't shop in stores or order anything I don't actually need, so I'm not bringing more stuff into the house, but am beginning to wonder if I'm ever going to get everything organized where I want it and the house cleaned to my satisfaction!

Re: Declutter 2025: What Have You Purged Today?

I have not purged anything personally but I worked for several hours with my stepdaughter in her garage.  Oh my..we filled her BIG recycling bin....with cardboard.

She had not torn down anythng all winter.

Several things were put to the curb for FREE so several things are gone.  She buys and then does not use, but does not have the money to do that...but she is an adult, I keep my mouth and just help.

She was thrilled with a clean and organized garage and I was tired!!

Re: Declutter 2025: What Have You Purged Today?

@BunSnoop   Have you ever thought about having a bear custom made from a shirt/sweater or different pieces of his clothing?

A bear might not be something you typically would want but the ones I have seen are very well made and they are a reminder of your loved one.

My step daughter had a couple made after her mothers husband died, they were all well received.

@Mom2Dogs , I had never heard of having a custom made bear made of clothes.  What a great idea - I'll have to look into that - thank you!
